  1. >On Tuesday’s episode of “Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky,” Oliver got choked up when Lewinsky thanked him for having her on the show. She said it was instrumental in her reclamation journey and allowed her to tell her story to the host’s younger crowd who may not know her as well.

    >“I’m also very, very grateful that you did it, because I know that it was not an easy decision to make,” Oliver said. “As part of that process that you’re clearly going through, a TED talk and a Vanity Fair op-ed is precise, right? And it’s all on your terms. You can get word-for-word, moment-to-moment. You can control all of it.”

    >He continued: “So I was extra grateful that you were willing to put yourself in the position where you would be under less control. And I do think it was a massive act of trust on your part. And I am very grateful that you thought we were worthy of that trust, because I know your trust had been broken in the past.”

    >In the “Last Week Tonight” segment, Oliver also admitted to cracking jokes at Lewinsky’s expense in the past. On the podcast, Lewinsky said that the host admitting to that and apologizing helped bring them closer together.

    >“I hadn’t heard the jokes, thankfully, but whatever jokes I have heard — when someone takes responsibility and apologizes, you actually end up sort of… it’s not just back to neutral where you were,” she said. “It’s more positive because there’s a value.”

  2. John Oliver is the guy that everyone thinks Jon Stewart is.

  3. Love John Oliver so much. Last Week Tonight is one of the only shows helping me cope with the absolute batshit insanity that is the U.S. at the moment.

  4. That interview is one of my all time favorites. Anytime it pops up on YouTube I watch it.

  5. Monica Lewinsky was absolutely under disproportionate scrutiny as a result of the affair, but I refuse to see her as a victim:

    She was 22-24 years old during the affair;

She was aware that Clinton was married and acted within the affair while Hillary was in the White House; and

It was consensual, with 9 incidents occurring and Lewinsky making the initial move.

There’s a victim in this story and it’s Hillary, not Lewinsky. I refuse to do the thing where we infantilize women.

Edit: For this arguing that she lacked agency or was coerced into the affair, see her testimony:

“According to Ms. Lewinsky, she and the President made eye contact when he came to the West Wing to see Mr. Panetta and Deputy Chief of Staff Harold Ickes, then again later at an informal birthday party for Jennifer Palmieri, Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff.(149) At one point, Ms. Lewinsky and the President talked alone in the Chief of Staff’s office. **In the course of flirting with him, she raised her jacket in the back and showed him the straps of her thong underwear, which extended above her pants.** (150)

En route to the restroom at about 8 p.m., she passed George Stephanopoulos’s office. The President was inside alone, and he beckoned her to enter.(151) **She told him that she had a crush on him.** He laughed, then asked if she would like to see his private office.(152) Through a connecting door in Mr. Stephanopoulos’s office, they went through the President’s private dining room toward the study off the Oval Office. Ms. Lewinsky testified: “We talked briefly and sort of acknowledged that there had been a chemistry that was there before and that **we were both attracted to each other** and then he asked me if he could kiss me.” Ms. Lewinsky said yes. In the windowless hallway adjacent to the study, they kissed.(153) Before returning to her desk, Ms. Lewinsky wrote down her name and telephone number for the President.(154)”

  6. I constantly think about how her life got ruined by that event. I admire the courageous person she grew up to be.

  7. He’s a real cryer. Don’t go see Titanic with this guy.

  8. I don’t get this victim tour Monica did.

She had a big part in handing the Republicans everything they need to tear down Clinton.

She was definitely old enough to know better.

Or are women just dumb at that age? Is that what she is saying?

She should step up and take the responsibility for the part she had in aiding the attack on progressive government.

    It takes two to tango.

  9. She was an adult who sucked a married mans cock and then has spent the last 30 years making bank of it and playing the victim. She’s been just fine

  10. Monica is a GODDAMN BABE and a badass. Love to her haters. =)

  11. She only got the access to the White House and that internship because her parents were big Clinton donors.

  12. Imagine your name is shamed by something you did when you were so young. She has a great sense of humor – she’s a survivor.

  13. American Crime Story: Impeachment shows how messed up Monica’s life became as part of the impeachment scandal. It also does a good job showing how sucky a person Bill Clinton is and makes you upset he wasn’t impeached and removed from office. He absolutely should have been.

  14. Just watched this episode of Reclaiming. It is great – I love both of them so much

  15. Monica Lewinsky is an admirable person and shows good character. Same with Oliver.
