100% he’s right. Sure look at covid. When people didn’t have anything but stay at home we turned to the arts, entertainment, music, books, craft, games. These are vital for our individual and collective health. Plus it’ll help spread joy and happiness in the world
Fact all news is bad news. I stopped watching. Should be a good mix.
Didn’t there _used_ to be? Or am I just experiencing a localised Mandela Effect & conflating some general entertainment / movie segments with a broad “arts” portion?
Great idea though, even if I doubt anyone under a certain age bracket watches “the news” anymore. Its social media that’s the poison here, doomscrolling through endless waves of bad news and toxicity.
Young people don’t watch the news
Nationwide is a show that basically focuses exclusively on arts and culture which airs straight after the news..
Brilliant idea. And while we’re at it, get rid of the feckin’ angelus nonsense as well.
Totally agree. I’d also like to see more documentaries on stuff we are doing right- buildings or infrastructure projects that are built well and make a difference like the luas, the 2nd runway, the new fab at intel or the Celtic interconnector. In Victorian England names like Brunel and his ilk were national celebrities. I don’t see why we shouldn’t try to celebrate what we are trying to do and accomplish as a nation rather than the current national sport of pissing all over things when it’s not a job well done. Would just help change the tone a bit in my opinion.
Just stick on TnaG for a bit of Geantraí or Snug cheol
Given the amount of mundane crap RTÉ reports on post- the ad break, I can’t see why not
Coolock says no!
I’d take anything that did mean RTÉ News filling every spare slot with repeats of interviews with actors. I don’t even mean Gleeson here, but that channel has an interview about a movie every half hour and I cannot understand why.
It would be great if RTÉ really took this suggestion and had more arts, culture and music.
I loved @last TV (I’m old!), they showcased loads of weird, wonderful stuff, and lots of Irish animators. Saw a lot of comedians for the first time on there too.
We are a small island renowned for big impact on the films, music and film, RTÉ could make some really obvious moves here.
Yeah for sure
I’d love if only president candidates were considered if they’d contributed to irish arts or literature. Its a token role, no need for business people to be running.
Great idea, Brendan for President!!
Great idea. I’d start watching the 6 o’clock news again.
It would be great.
100% very simple idea that can create suck positivity and what our culture is all about
Excellent idea. I think he is spot on!
I’d go one further and say there should be an arts branch of the GAA. Can you imagine how brilliant the country would be with a dedicated arts facility in every town with summer camps for kids? If the same spirit and energy that’s put into sport was also dedicated to performing arts, visual arts, writing, history .. the payback to the country would be 10fold. We’d fix so many problems for people, it would be marvelous. Sure the Olympics used to have arts categories, it’s not a new idea.
This is a brilliant idea.
They need to get rid of the fluff shit that they have at the end of the news. They went hard on it over covid to end each program on a light bit of good news, but its fucking dire now, like someone knitting jumpers for cats or some shite.
Good idea but how many youths do you know watch rte news?
Sure. But he’s assuming people watch the 6 O’Clock News like it’s 1994.
What he said about loneliness was spot on. The weir was absolutely incredible. Felt like being with friends. It’s much more intimate than any TV show, movie or video game. Went last weekend and am still thinking about it. If you can get a ticket I fully recommend going. Me and the wife made a decision a little while back to get back into going to the theatre and it’s been going great so far.

100% all in on this
There’s a fucking sports section on the radio all Saturday and Sunday after fuckin noon, it’s a disgrace, Joe.
Trevor McDonald ending News at 10 on some good news story always raised a smile and almost made up for them cutting to the news half way through Robocop
There used to be an item called the “dead donkey” (the guys who did the show made it up, but it became real) in each news broadcast that was a good news filler that could be moved off if something big happened. They could just bring that back. It would be nothing new.
Absolutely 100% on board with him!
I hate the feckin sports section on the news. Have even heart it 2x as long as regular news on the radio sometimes. Ridiculous
Yes. Look at how huge GAA is, how much community it builds and how accessible it is. Why not do the same as arts. Especially since it’s a huge part of our historical and cultural identity
Hopefully someone will listen to the man.
Brendan its called Nationwide. Its right there.
Totally agree
Nah people love their misery porn. My parents favourite hobby these days is yelling at the TV screen. It’s nice seeing them so happy.
Totally agree. I’m sorry guys you’ll hate me for saying this but I don’t consider sports or famous people to be news worthy.
I need to hug this man.
One of the thing RTE could do to redeem a bit of relevance
I agree. Plus he’s my mother’s cousin…sorry, that’s my claim to fame, and he’s a great actor!
Great idea but I have no doubt the execution would be terrible. Filled with cringe inducing crap.
Had things like this in France in the 90s. Science also had short segments at peak hours. And I loved it, it opens your mind to other ideas also
We’re a nation of writers so it would be great to see the news end with either a poem or an extract of Irish writing. Wouldn’t even need to be on the main news but a segment at the end of the 9pm news on a Sunday or something.
It’s a no brainer , particularly with Tv being so poor ! Support and respect the arts
