President Donald Trump marked the 90th anniversary of Social Security, the country’s largest governmental assistance program, with remarks in the Oval Office Thursday, saying his administration has decreased wait times at field offices and by phone, and increased availability of services for seniors.

“Today we celebrate that 90th anniversary of one of the most significant pieces of legislation ever signed into law, the Social Security Act of 1935, and we’re going to make it stronger, bigger and better,” Trump said.

He also said that his recent landmark legislation “allowed no tax” on Social Security, which the Tax Policy Center says isn’t true. About two-thirds of all seniors already don’t pay federal income tax on the benefits because they make too little.

Trump also said that 275,000 undocumented immigrants were kicked off of the Social Security rolls, and again raised the false claim that millions of dead people were receiving benefits. Undocumented people are not eligible to receive Social Security, though a 2024 report found they paid more than $25 billion in Social Security taxes in 2022.
