Los Angeles: Firefighters make progress against blaze that forced thousands to flee • FRANCE 24
Water bombers aid crews on the ground trying to contain the canyon fire. Since Thursday, more than 22 square kilometers have been burned. The brush fire has been fast moving, catching some residents by surprise. We never thought that it would be here and within 4 hours it’s it was here. So then you’re scattering to get everything out of here and then you just realize I ain’t going anywhere. I’m here. So that’s it. With officials lifting most of the evacuation warnings, residents are now assessing the damage. You have 100 acres here. Like I said, I think 99 of them burned. We are so blessed. We’re so thankful. If it wasn’t for these CalFire men, we would have lost everything. Officials warned that while progress has been made, conditions on the ground remain challenging as firefighters also battle the wind, hot weather, and drought conditions. The Canyon Fire is just one of a dozen wildfires currently burning in California. In Los Padres’s National Forest, the Gford fire has burned through 402 square kilometers and it’s only 15% contained.
Firefighters in a mountainous area north of Los Angeles made good progress in their battle against a brush fire that has forced thousands of people to evacuate, officials said on August 8.
