I've often thought that it would be nice to turn this area into a mini Botanic Gardens but I presume whoever owns the land has other ideas. But, would it be possible to do (assuming time and budgets were no issue) or would the quality of the soil rule that out altogether?

  1. This derelict land is the old Sirocco Works, there’s some good history about the place of you look it up. It’s a good Wikipedia article to read in work if you’ve nothing to do lol as far as development goes I’m 90% sure there’s planning permission in place but idk what for.

  2. I remember seeing something about time team or whatever the TV show was called exploring there a load of years back and they were digging up the land because something was found or to see if something can be found.. It was a while ago.

I just always presumed it was thereafter a protected “site” as such but never gave it much thought

  3. > Vacant Land Facing the Short Strand

Land lying bare in Donegall Square

    Empty ground in Andytown

  4. A few meanwhile gardens have been built. Temporary community gardens until the ground breaks. Might be worth looking into

  5. In sure once they clear all the superfund stuff off the old gas tank area, it’d be perfectly healthy to live there

  6. Brand new hospital with a large multistorey car park, accomodating all that is needed by the existing hospitals, but right beside a motor way in a central location near major public transport routes. Rather than continuing to utilise falling apart Victorian hospitals, while trying to find space to build expensive new buildings in the midst of those sites, while having no space for staff parking.

  7. Used to be terrace housing along the Short Strand with a little street called Quinn Street where the Scirocco Works had offices.

  8. It was owned by Carvill (i think) who went bust. Big housing developer.

  9. A botanical garden, even a small one, would cost millions. Hardly a priority with so many statutory services in smithereens.

  10. I did hear someone say there is possibly archaeological stuff on that site. Any developer will get held up so badly while the nerds do the digging it’ll kill any development.

  11. Such a waste of good land when the city is crying out for student accommodation and cafe Neros

  12. It is mental having essentially a giant field in our city center!

  13. I pass this all the time and wonder what the craic is. Surely it is just going to end up being apartments and shite?

  14. Nothing to see here! It’s just part of the decimation of the UNIONIST community in Belfast
