Mods delete if not allowed as I know this is a NI sub but I thought this was still relevant and important enough to post here and I cant post in r/ireland just yet.

Earlier this year I spent some time in Ukraine volunteering through a few NGOs. While there I paid a visit to the memorial site at Independence Square in Kyiv. Amongst the tens of thousands of flags resides a small patch for our own who have fallen while serving in Ukraine's armed forces.

Their names are as follows,

Alex Ryzhuk from County Dublin (20)

Graham Dale from County Dublin (45)

Finbar Cafferkey from Achill Island County Mayo (45)

Robert Deegan from County Kildare (29)

Rory Mason from County Meath (23)

I left a bottle of Bucky, Tri Colour and patch for the them. I was told by mutuals that they were all larger than life individuals who were the embodiment of selfless commitment. Its important that we remember their names and the sacrifices that they made. You wont hear about them but regardless of political stances or beliefs back home, there's blokes from both Northern Ireland and the Republic serving together in Ukraine's ranks giving the good fight, united for a just cause. If you're curious about how you can support Ukraine and our own id be happy to signpost in the right direction.

  1. Fair fucks to them. I’ve never found the idea of even fighting for our own military against an existential threat to be appealing. So to go and do it for a foreign country purely because it’s the right thing to do is incredible. RIP.

  2. Very worthy, yes – but they’re all from the Republic of Ireland, so shoving it in here feels a bit like gate-crashing the wrong wake.

The r/Ireland lot ought to let you post it – kinda baffling that they won’t, seeing as the dearly departed are from their own turf.

Still, if it gives you a bit of comfort to post it here in their memory, who’s going to stop you?

Live and let live. Shame the mods over there can’t manage the same within the (virtual ) borders the mourned once called home.

  3. Good fucking on you for fighting for the rights of nations fuck the sellouts and Putin god bless Ukraine and those who fight for it.

  4. Crazy to know there are Irish/British people on the Russian side fighting against Ukraine too.

Two unfortunately corrupt countries fighting in a war. Hope it ends soon

  5. I have no respect for people who throw their lives away to fight someone else’s war. I feel the same way about this as I do Brits fighting the Japanese in Singapore or Malaya.

If you want to do something valuable with your life you could do a lot better than trying to kill people.
