US-Russia summit over Ukraine war could force “unacceptable compromises” • FRANCE 24 English

Donald Trump’s ambition for a peace deal in Ukraine putting pressure on Vladimir Zalinski as he prepares to meet Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. The US president expressed his eyeire at Zalinsk’s insistence that seeding Ukrainian territory to Russia is impossible as it would violate his country’s constitution. I was a little bothered by the fact that Zilinski was saying, “Well, I have to get constitutional approval.” I mean, he’s he’s got approval to go into war and kill everybody, but he needs approval to do a land swap because there’ll be some land swapping going on. Ukraine currently holds no Russian territory, meaning that a swap would likely involve Kiev signing over its own territory in exchange for the withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukrainian land they have conquered elsewhere. Since launching its full-scale invasion in 2022, Russia has officially annexed four provinces of eastern Ukraine. Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaparisia, and Kon. Beyond Crimea, which the Kremlin annexed in 2014, Luhansk is the only one over which it claims full territorial control. Russian forces though are continuing their slow but steady advance. There is no sign that the Russians are preparing for a postwar situation. On the contrary, they are moving their troops and forces to launch new offensive operations. Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkov, has previously suggested that Ukraine give up all of Donetsk and Luhansk in exchange for a ceasefire, a scenario that would give Russia recognized control over a strategic industrial region that could be a launching point for a renewed invasion later on. Western analysts worry that the very format of the Alaska talks heavily favors Moscow and could leave Kiev with little room to maneuver.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday warned against capitulating to the demands of President Vladimir Putin ahead of talks Friday between the Russian leader and US President Donald Trump. Bryan Quinn reports.

  1. Why would Russia prepare for peace if Ukraine keeps rejecting it? Just simple exploratory conversations between President Putin and President Trump make the EU and Zelensky become hostile. Temper the attitude if you want Russia to prepare for peace.

  2. Zlenski says that he doesn't agree with this or that statement. He doesn't like one thing and doesn't like another. He's always looking for reasons and excuses to disrupt the meeting in Alaska.

  3. As long as Zelensky's stays in power no matter what, all is just fine with him the "dictator without elections".

  4. Zelensky doesn't agree with nothing at all. But he really has to realize and accept the negotiating position is not in his favor.

  5. Imagine annexing someone else's land without even having full control over these regions – that's Russia. They announced a referendum there and everything. Clowns.

  6. Zelensky only has a lose lose option. Either agree and lose less, or reject and lose more. There is no other way around for them. No amount of arms can reverse the battle situation anymore. Ukraine has no men to win. The only option is- NATO sending combat troops, which is never happening. So, dear Zelensky, come to your senses, get a deal.

  7. Europe must arm Ukraine, and increase war production manufacturing now. This Trump Putin bro stuff is sickening. Zelensky should not go to this meeting either it is far too dangerous for him.

  8. Zelensky is the " Swindler in Europes Bread Basket". What standing does he have to warn us of Putins intentions. His intentions are for everyone to see.

  9. These territories have always remained Russian, they have never been under the Polish or Lithuanian rule.
Unless these Ukrainians are Russians, should speak Polish or Lithuanian instead of a Russian dialect.

  10. Does he still not understand that Ukraine was invaded by Russia.
Zelenski didn't go to war. They were invaded, there is a difference.

  11. Without starting any peace dialogue, both European countries and Zelensky are giving their own statements publicly, meaning that they just want everything back from Russia which is an impossible thing and therefore this meeting seems to be an useless one.

  12. This is a European war, and it needs a European solution. Trump doesn't care about Europe, and Europeans don't like Trump. It's mutual. Trump should let the Europeans negotiate with Putin to end this war. Starmer, Macron, and Merz should be the ones talking to Putin. Trump should also end all military aid to Ukraine. The EU is acting as if it's doing Trump a favor. Where was the EU when Russia was terrorizing Ukraine last month? Putin stopped only because of Trump threats. Europe is irrelevant.

  13. the warmongers in Europe and usa made sure the negotiations in Istanbul and who lost more the Ukrainians did
this time the europian leaders are making sure no outcome is comming as a result of Friday meetings
