  2. I realised that, as Rooney sat for his permanent MoTD pundit slot, I was last in this position when I was 16 and Shearer was being introduced. That a generation has since come to pass.

    Then I looked at myself in the mirror and thought where has the time gone? That and I don’t look too bad for a middle aged bloke.

  8. The BBC and MOTD need to do better with their “experts”. Shearer got Newcastle relegated and Rooney has a 25% win record in managerial career…

  16. I do feel old at football matches. I realised a few months ago that Im now older than most of the players on pitch and possibly the referee. When Im older than the manager than. Im going to start doing what I think other old men do and spend my saturdays looking at the power tool section of B&Q pretending I know how to use them all and think of imaginary projects I can get halfway through with.

  22. I remember watching Saint and Greavsie as a kid and being shocked when my Dad told me they had once been great footballers. Up to that point 8 year old me had assumed they were washed up comedians.

    I remember Newcastle putting a bid in for Rooney before he left Everton and I attended Shearer’s Testimonial against Celtic.

    Time does march on.

  25. I prefer just catching the highlights on YouTube via the Sky Sports channel earlier in the evening. MOTD is a thing of the past for me and also I did stream the Spurs game live.

  26. One of the facts that occasionally comes to mind and makes me feel better about my fitness and appearance, is that Wayne Rooney is younger than me and spent most of his adult life as a professional athlete.

  33. Match of the day is now on youtube called ‘the rest is football’ hosted by gary linekar. Gary linekar is match of the day. All this bbc highlights show hosted by women is a load of tosh!!! Enough said!
