2 days ago, after his meeting with president Trump in Alaska, it was revealed that Putin said he would agree to a ceasefire and "freeze" the war in Ukraine if given full control of the Ukraine Donetsk Oblast region. Now, normally I would see such terms as far too one-sided. However, after doing research, it appears that most Ukrainian citizens in the Oblast region support Russia and wish to secede from Ukraine anyways. They even formed the People's Militias of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) to fight alongside Russia during the war in 2022, among other separatist regions in Ukraine. Moreover, Russia already occupies over 70% of the Donetsk region, and it's essentially only asking for the remaining 30% that Ukraine is barely hanging onto.
My question is, what's the point of forcing people to be apart of Ukraine who don't want to be? I understand that many Ukrainian lives have been lost trying to defend the border region of Donetsk, and it would be a bitter pill to swallow if they had to give it all up. I also realize that Putin's agreement to "freeze" the war could disappear the moment he gets what he wants. What if he stays true to his word, though? If there is a chance for real, lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine, should we not support it?
