Billionaire developer Asif Aziz is one of London's most powerful and influential landowners – he's the same man who's trying to evict the Prince Charles Cinema. He also owns so much more of London than you could imagine, from the Trocadero Centre to the McDonalds in Dalston and the land around Tooting Market.

The Londoner just did an investigation into him, which found that he secretly uses a web of companies registered in the Isle of Man to shutter dozens of London pubs and redevelop them, often without planning permission.

  1. is he the guy the sign outside The China Hall says has to stop the development?

The China Hall has been a pub and theatre on that site for over 400 years and is even referenced in Pepys diaries. It utterly broke my heart when it was shut down for redevelopment but thank god the council stepped in very fast to protect it.

  2. Imagine the good you could do as a billionaire. The positive legacy you could leave. Or you could just ruin precious things and amass a bit more cash, I suppose.

  3. this is the kind of parasitic landlordism that any future mayoral candidate should be railing against.

Khan has been way too weak on this kind of thing – and if you look into the connections between Aziz and Khan, you start to understand why.

The one positive here is that we have multiple outlets doing good investigative journalism again in our city.

  4. Then they do articles about how the tax hikes are responsible for the pubs shutting.
It is an insult to the intelligence of someone this Real Estate non sense

  5. What a piece of work, good he’s being exposed. Killing London staples for shitty unaffordable flats

  6. wonder if there’s a religious motivation behind this, as well as the monetary one?

  7. Man who funds Muslim-only internships in Parliament shows disregard for pubs

  8. What I don’t really get is…why? These are huge cash draws.

  9. Does Asif Aziz not recognise the cultural significance of a great boozer?

  10. Love this. The idea that pubs are closing because of some secret billionaire, not because of the high tax, high regulation, workshy environment in which they operate. Nope, blame the evil billionaires so we can all have a natter in a socialist circlejerk.

  11. It’s the change in demographics thats shutting down the pubs in London

  12. He’s one bad example, but really there is a whole system designed to leech the heart and soul from our country for financial gain.
