Debatable if moves like this are actually good for consumers. Sometimes I don’t need anything more than a small bag and don’t pay extra – now it’ll just be baked into the price anyways. Also means less space for hand luggage (hence more gate-checking).
Ryanair only have themselves to blame. They have been taking the piss lately with charging people at the gate and claiming their bags are too big.

I’m not for or against this, but it’s quite benign compared to the fact they’re (E.U. lawmakers) trying to quietly bring in legislation that means all our messages must be scanned.
So I guess now most airlines will force the luggage to be checked-in, like Aer Lingus? Because, as far as I know, there is not enough space for everyone to put the carry-ons on the overhead bins, right? So if everyone can bring one for free, and everyone does, but then the bags don’t fit when everyone is boarding….?
It’s a proposal – not a mandate yet
It is only 7kg worth of free hand luggage afaik. I presume the additional few K with be charged at high rates. Or forced to put in hold over 7kg and charged for the privilege.
I wouldn’t get too excited.
There are already two tiers of hand luggage – the little propeller planes operated by the likes of Emerald to regional airports have smaller hand luggage allowances simply because the lockers are smaller.
If the EU is to introduce this, I imagine they’ll set a minimum size bag that must be allowed as hand luggage – and this minimum will be in line with the smaller planes like those little ATR-72s.
Ryanair will allow those bags free because they have to. But they’ll charge for “premium” – larger hand luggage which will conveniently be the small suitcases we’re all used to.

Great so now we’ll all be paying more for flights
Those of you cheering for this have no idea how much you’re going to be paying for flights after this takes effect. Say goodbye to sub €100 weekend city breaks.
Just watch the prices go up as a result and everyones had luggage being weighed, with anything above 7kg being charged £50 for being put in the hold.
There’s only space for 90 overhead bags on Ryanair’s planes. Wonder how this will work.
Well the next part is stupid. Is everyone going to be happy paying for free seats of families with children and/or carers? This is the stupid part. If you take an extra seat, pay for it as I ain’t paying extra for someone’s 2 or so children.

So competent travellers and solo travellers who travel light that actually know how to read and follow the baggage allowance rules will now see their ticket price go up and have to subsidise all the idiots that can’t follow instructions. Cheers lads 👍

This is not good. As someone who flies short haul regularly using my small baggage allowance, frequently benefitting from 30/40 euro return flights, this is going to almost certainly double the cost of such flights. Air travel isn’t a right, why on earth is carrying a larger piece of hand luggage a right.
