We have found such video cameras in dozens on Heron reconnaissance drones. And now cameras have appeared on Shaheds.

It is too early to say why the Russia installs them and how exactly they use them, but it can be said for sure that the Russians are trying to get video footage during the flight of the Shahed up to the moment of impact.

  1. The orcs are likely collecting footage of flight paths for inertial navigation systems as Ukraine has been successful in jamming the satellite based glonass locators that have been used for flight path correction.

    This isn’t a new development, apart from attack drones, Russian Geran swarms often contain decoys (“G*eranium*”) and scout Gerans equipped with sensors to conduct electro-magnetic spectrum surveys in order to identify gaps within the Ukrainian air defense.

    There are also indicators that Russia has incorporated technical design features from Chinese-designed “Gerbera” drone upgrade kits into the recent Geran-2 variants (*scout variants communicating via mesh network within the drone swarm and relaying information by dedicated repeater drones*).

    Wild guess is to check for Xingkay Tec XK-series components.

  2. I think there’s a very good possibility the Russians have turned some of those Shahed’s in to FPV instead of simple targett projegraming. They would be limited since they are restricted to aerobatic flight flight and can’t hover or really do anything other FPV drones can do at high speeds. Of the course’s there some things in here no FPV drone is going to beat.. Speed, the amount explosives.

    Also, the Ukrainians being who they are, kind of already have an answer for this is it’s for spying purposes, ie, scanning, taking pictures along the way. Pretty sure a high powered microwave blast would take it down. I suspect only anti-air guns could take them out. The Ukrainians do a good job.

    Now lets see if Trump and his gang of morons can get anything done that won’t put Ukrainians in any more damger.

  3. With my Gamer mind, it depends how these waves and the Ukraine layers of air defence. But my take is to send a wave with a mix of these drones, some with camera and the usual ones without. To possibly locate the origin of air defence. As Ukraine has to respond. Then with your next wave of shaheds, aslo strike with ballistic or cruise missiles to target these identified areas. Also some hybesonic cruise missiles with the first wave, as this will reveal PATRIOT sites. The INTEL could also be corrections for the next wave, to avoid particular AA.

    Doing this, either force Ukraine to relocate and likely not be ready for the next wave. Or to be targeted by precision strikes. Anyway, this intel will both verify or extend already existing intelligence sources.

  6. They are defiantly getting more tech from China, probably want to see what they are hitting or not. Could be dangerous for the defenders possibly showing their locations.

  7. they install them so that the shahed can fly past EW because there is no broadcasting connection during the cruise portion of the flight. . likely just dead reckoning/internal guidance until the last minute of flight, then the drone turns on the transmission/receivers and an operator guides the shahed to select a target then lets the autotarget take over.
