The attacks reported over the last 48 hours happened around the Donegall Pass area

Multiple attacks by young people throwing bottles, cans and water balloons at members of the public, including immigrants, have taken place in south Belfast over the last two days.

The attacks were reported over the last 48 hours in the Donegall Pass area of the city.

Members of ethnic communities were targeted, police said.

Neighbourhood Inspector Róisín Brown said: “A number of our minority ethnic community have been targeted and have been left feeling afraid and unwelcome in the area.”

One man was knocked off his scooter while “a vulnerable young woman was targeted by anti-social behaviour causing her to extreme distress”, Inspector Brown said.

She added: “Along with this we are also receiving reports of elderly people being in fear.”

The officer issued an appeal to parents and guardians “to know where your children are and what they are doing”.

“This guidance could well be the thing that prevents them from ending up with a criminal record,“ Insp Brown said.

“I am also appealing to these young people themselves – this may seem like harmless fun, however we are actively investigating reports of assaults and public order offences.

“We do not wish to criminalise young people, but this must always be balanced against our duty to keep the public safe and to investigate offences reported to us.

“I would ask that you all support us to put an end this behaviour.”

  2. I passed a “stop the boats” protest on Donegall Pass a few weeks back. Young lads of 9 or 10 waving placards and whatnot. There’s no hope for them young fellas

  3. I’m all for calling out racism when it happens, but this just sounds like little shits making life hell for everyone and it’s pure clickbait to tag on that some of the targets were immigrants to try and sell a racist angle to the story.

  7. How many people live or work on Donegal pass that aren’t immigrants or children of immigrants?

    It’s a shame people can’t be safe in their own area without “locals” thinking they are protecting the community.

    The community works around the “locals” they just don’t realise or care. They are the creepy uncle/auntie that no-one wants at the party.
