  1. I love driving through Thornton le dale on my way home, it’s such a pretty place

  2. Looks liable to flooding, no doubt a septic tank as well that backs up when it’s very wet/snow, good chance of a bore hole for water so no water when there is a power cut.

Not so idyllic when you have to live there year round.

  3. My husband and I almost rented a house on that same row, years ago. It was beautiful, but the job offer my husband had fell through and we had to relocate to Woking instead.

I absolutely hated Woking. Though I did appreciate the ethnic groceries in walking distance. Portsmouth has even more, though!

  4. I’m thinking Cotswolds possibly. Definitely has a British countryside look.

  5. For those who haven’t been to Thornton le dale it’s a beautiful place. Just down the road from Dalby Forrest. That particular photo is from the main road and if you follow the path around it’s even more beautiful. Yes it has these small necks and the water runs through it they’re very well cared for. It’s crystal clear water ,I’ve seen otters there. Gorgeous place.

  6. Ooh, I knew where this was instantly, because I too have coveted these houses when visiting.

    Such a lovely place.

  7. Heyup, that’s Thornton Dale but I don’t recall those wooden railings. No doubt they’ve been there since the Middle Ages and I’ve just forgotten them, being as enchanted as I must have been by that thatched cottage.

Tell you what though, something tells me your dream (if it’s a dream of living in that cottage) might be better than reality. Imagine all those tourists wandering past inspecting your rose bushes every 30 seconds!

    Such a lovely place.

  9. Have visited this location on and off for around 40 years now, always loved paddling through that stream as a kid.

  10. This was on my bus route for a while. Gorgeous place!

  11. The problem with modern UK is everyone is sold a lie, that you work and graft and at the end of your life when old and with morbidity factors in geriatric phase of life at retirement you can afford such a different life vision…

Just consider if villages and towns were all like this instead for the basics of a human scale livable environment instead.

As to what makes such a scene seem livable that is worth understanding at a deeper level, eg natural material building in keeping with the area, a brook or stream or small rover which enhances wildlife and scenery and peace. The list goes on.

  12. Oh I remember this house, didn’t it win the most picturesque house in the UK a couple of years ago?

  13. that’s gorgeous. I do wonder how much maintenance a thatched roof is though

  14. Looks like a scene from Vicar of Dibley or Midsomer Murders
