ICC is a big joke now and a waste of taxpayers’ money.
Sudanese dicator and genocial miniac Omar Al-bashir visited Soith Africa without any issues despite the arrest warrant.
Netanyahu was welcomed to Hungary and Greece, and many European countries like Poland, UK, France, Italy, Denmark, Czech and Romania said they wouldn’t arrest him if ever visited.
Putin visited Mongolia last year, and now he will visit Switzerland without getting arrested.
Every dictator in Africa and elsewhere is watching this closely. Is watching how “The West” is bending and breaking the rules they demand we follow to appease war criminals and genocidal dictators on the sole basis of their ethnicity. It’s not the ICC that is broken, it is the moral compass of Western countries.
I honestly wonder why the ICC is so weak. Arresting Putin in Alaska would probably be the smartest move possible. He won’t relent, no peace deal can be trusted, he rules his country with an iron fist, his government would probably collapse in weeks without him. I know there’s down sides but leaving him in power is surely the worst option.
I understand that negotiations have to take place, but if countries can just grant immunities without consrquence, then what is even the point? They’re making the ICC even more worthless.
If you’re angry at the Swiss now, can you please not burn *our* flag or deface *our* embassies? I know poor Switzerland had to go through that when extremists in the Middle East were burning the Swiss flag in protests against the Quran burnings in my country…
I can “understand” not grabbing Putin or Bibi from a realpolitik lens. It’s the refusal to arrest people like Al-bashir that really exposes the moral fragility of the current western order.
Nation states afraid if they start enforcing the law they’ll become subject to it as well. Two generations of general apathy and disinterest from western citizens in/about how their nation treat them and others let the foxes in the hen house. Now we’re complaining about eggs instead of shooting foxes.
