Zelensky says he will meet US president in Washington • FRANCE 24 English

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky will head to Washington to discuss “ending the killing and the war” with US President Donald Trump, he announced Saturday (August 16). The Washington meeting is set to take place three days after Trump’s talks with Putin in Alaska ended with no ceasefire announcement or apparent breakthrough to end Moscow’s more than three-year-long invasion. FRANCE 24’s Emmanuelle Chaze tells us more about the outcome of this summit.

  1. Great. This is what you wanted right. Trump meets Putin and then meets Zelensky to discuss the meeting BEFORE announcing any deals publicly. 😊

  2. Very simple solution. Ukraine gives Russia the land they won in the war, considering some of the land was given to Ukraine. Ukraine gets security guarantees, Russia understands another invasion results in an immediate war with the US.

  3. “A stitch in time saves nine.” Zelensky may have missed a crucial opportunity to end the war three years ago by not heeding the advice of EU leaders. At the time, Russia was on the defensive and even retreating, yet the belief in defeating Russia outright and securing NATO membership took center stage. Any mention of a negotiating table would provoke a defensive response from Zelensky and many Ukrainians, often leading to dismissive or insulting reactions.

Fast-forward to today, it has become increasingly clear that there is no viable military solution to this conflict. Any military outcome points either to a complete Russian takeover of Ukraine or to a catastrophic escalation into World War III between Russia and the West. Ultimately, negotiations remain the only realistic path forward. Ironically, Zelensky—who once rejected the very idea of talks—now laments being sidelined from them.

    The lessons here are sobering:
    1) Think independently and determine what is truly in your own best interest.
    2) Evaluate the intentions of those offering advice; not everyone has your welfare at heart, and many pursue their own hidden agendas.
    3) Exit a bad situation early—cutting losses sooner often prevents far greater losses later, as evidenced by the 20% of Ukrainian territory now under Russian control.
4)Avoid living in a bubble; acknowledge reality, recognize opportunities for resolution, and act before conditions deteriorate further.

As it stands, Zelensky risks being remembered as one of the most unsuccessful presidents in modern history.

  4. Ukraine, be strong and consistent in your opposition to Russia and do not give in to the pressure of the US President! Ukraine, if you have not done so already, think about how you can drag Putin and his henchmen to court in The Hague!?!

  5. Zelensky and the Europeans are irrelevant.
The EU is a failed experiment.
The UK media has lied to its audience and lost all credibility. Instead of seeking peace, the European leaders demand more war, suffering and death. Russia has won this and Ukraine and Ukraine's allies have lost big time.

  6. Ukrainians were glad there was no peace agreement. For them it would have implied that Ukraine was carved up and handed over to Putin. They would have cried that it was done with no input from them.

  7. Zelenski has been summoned by D.Trump to visit Washington to hear detail instructions regarding ending up the war . All those details was agreed by President Putin na D.Trump in Anchorage last Friday 😊
