Ocoee Theatre will hold auditions this weekend for this fall’s production of Samuel Taylor’s romantic comedy “Sabrina Fair.”
The auditions will be held on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 22 and 23, at 6:30 p.m., with callbacks on Sunday, Aug. 24. The auditions will be held in the Humanities Building, room 111, on the Lee University campus.
The play includes 14 roles ranging in age from 20 to 70-plus.
“Ocoee Theatre is looking for dynamic personalities who love to act, or who would love to give it a try,” a statement from the theater company noted. “Previous experience is helpful but not mandatory. A willingness to learn and to try something new is always a plus.”
Hailed as charming, sophisticated and witty, Taylor’s “Sabrina Fair” premiered in 1954. It is a tale of a young girl whose father is the live-in chauffeur to a very wealthy family on Long Island. The main character, Sabrina, has long been in love with the younger son of the house, David, a wealthy, shallow playboy. Sabrina’s chauffeur father is dismayed by Sabrina’s longstanding crush. He believes the social classes should stay completely separated, and he sends Sabrina to Paris to divert her interest in David. Things shift into high gear when a very grown-up Sabrina returns from her years in Paris.
In 1955, Paramount Pictures mounted a film production of the play, the iconic “Sabrina” starring Audrey Hepburn and William Holden. The film bore some resemblance to Taylor’s play. Many of the characters in the play are in the film, but some are missing, and the story line of the film bends in a somewhat different direction to that of Taylor’s plot. The film underwent a remake in 1995 with Julia Ormond and Harrison Ford that generally followed the same plot line.
“As a spoiler alert for fans of the films, the play has some surprises and intrigues that the films leave out,” according to the statement. “Look for a bombshell mystery character that doesn’t show up in either of the films.”
Acclaimed for its magical charm, “Sabrina Fair” should be on the list of things to see in Cleveland this fall.
Ocoee Theater’s “Sabrina Fair” will run Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 25 at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. in the Cleveland Middle School theatre. Tickets are $20 and will be available at simpletix.com.
