1. LAUSD takes precautions as heat wave arrives

Los Angeles Unified School District officials said Tuesday the district will take steps to protect students and staff from soaring temperatures expected during a heat wave set to back much of the region for the rest of the week.

Protective measures being implemented by the district include:

modification of scheduled for recess and lunch to minimize outdoor exposure
rescheduling or modifying schedules for high school athletic events and outdoor clubs
ensuring air conditioners are functioning, and preparing portable units if needed
relocating students to cooler spaces if air conditioners fail in classrooms
closing doors and windows to maintain cooler temperatures
providing frequent water breaks
monitor and adjust physical activities
limiting the use of hot surfaces such as asphalt, concrete and artificial turn to cooler early hours

2. Immigration raids at Westchester car wash spark community outcry

When Lucy Fann pulled out her phone on Monday in Westchester, she said she felt helpless watching U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents detain workers at her neighborhood hand car wash.

“This is not OK. It’s inhumane,” Fann can be heard saying in her video. “This is terrible. This is so un-American.”

Fann filmed as three men were taken away, including at least one who had worked at the business for 18 years. That’s why she and other concerned residents returned on Tuesday to protest outside the car wash, holding signs and chanting against what they call unjust raids.

Car wash owner Mehmet Aydogan said this is the third time immigration agents have targeted his business. Back in June, officers carried out two raids on back-to-back days. This week, three more of his employees were detained.

3. California redistricting shuffles more GOP voters into Garcia’s district, congressman says bring it on

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s push to redraw California’s congressional districts to secure five more Democratic House seats has led to a shuffling of voter demographics throughout the state, particularly in southern California.

The new boundaries add a large swath of Democratic voters to each of the five Republican districts state leadership is targeting in hopes of flipping them in 2026. In most cases, these shifts would make heavily Democratic districts only slightly less blue. But that’s not the case in the 42nd District, now represented by Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif.

“I love my current congressional district, but I understand the stakes,” Garcia wrote on social media, adding, “Democracy is on the line. When this new map is approved by voters, I look forward to running in the new 42nd district, made up of my hometown of Long Beach, coastal OC, Costa Mesa & South Santa Ana.”

By absorbing those cities into his district, the areas Garcia will give up are essentially bolstering battleground Democrats like Rep. Dave Min, D-Calif., who currently represents Huntington Beach and Newport Beach.

Mojave Desert solar farm powering 7% of LA homes

Los Angeles is adding power from one of the nation’s largest solar and battery projects, with 1.3 million panels in the Mojave Desert now connected to the city’s grid.

The $2 billion Eland Solar and Storage Center will generate enough electricity to power 7% of Los Angeles homes, pushing the city’s clean energy share above 60%.

It represents a major step toward the city’s goal of running entirely on renewable energy by 2035.
