Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis met with interim Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani in Athens on Wednesday, the Greek Foreign Ministry announced.
“Mr. Gerapetritis stressed that Greece consistently supports the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Syria and reiterated the necessity for the Syrian transitional administration to uphold its commitments to inclusive governance,” read the announcement, adding that Gerapetritis reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to protect Syrian Christians.
According to the announcement, Gerapetritis also underlined the importance of adherence to international law and specifically the Law of the Sea, as well as respect for the sovereign rights of neighboring states.
The announcement concluded by adding that Gerapetritis and Al-Shaibani agreed to establish a trilateral framework with the participation of the Republic of Cyprus, with a possible first meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September.
