One week after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s triumphant arrival in Alaska for his summit meeting with the American leader, the Russians have now systematically torched every possible avenue for progress.

    On Thursday, while Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov insisted that [Putin](https://inews.co.uk/topic/vladimir-putin?srsltid=AfmBOoqNrmi_IfyVQhMW4qsXIk85VYfcr9CYq_FQNkt3S0nMAUroah-u&ico=in-line_link) “has repeatedly said that he is ready to meet” Ukrainian President [Volodymyr Zelensky](https://inews.co.uk/topic/volodymyr-zelensky?srsltid=AfmBOooehEoc-p2T8lt1YP0kePTLuFHw1sqjzySRn7v1PsZl2W0e-Yvc&ico=in-line_link), he immediately produced a raft of fresh obstacles to ensure any prospect of a direct encounter between the two men is derailed.

    Meeting India’s foreign minister in [Moscow](https://inews.co.uk/topic/moscow?srsltid=AfmBOorqKlUtn7PY-3oQKzJWamX6gAUrHbdZRYAlfhNRRLJt8dKgDBhb&ico=in-line_link), Lavrov proclaimed: “Putin is ready to meet with Zelensky only if all issues that require discussion at the highest level are well worked out”. He then suggested that one of those issues might even be the legal right of Zelensky to engage in negotiations with the Russians.

    “In the event of signing agreements with Ukraine”, he said, “it will be necessary to resolve the issue of the legitimacy of the signatory from Kyiv”.

    That’s a reference to Moscow’s repeated insistence that Ukraine’s election, delayed since last year because the country has come under continuing Russian attack, has left Zelensky with no mandate to remain in office. Taken to its logical conclusion, Lavrov was indicating there will be no bilateral meeting with Putin until Zelensky either wins a fresh mandate, or his successor is in place.

  5. I can only imagine a scene in the kremlin, where putin and his fellow war criminals are sitting around, toasting with vodka, the ease of duping the leader of the free world.

  6. Putin has no intention of making a deal. His main objective with these fake peace negotiations is to make it seem like Ukraine is being irrational and they’re the reason why the war continues. It’s nothing more than Russian propaganda. Anything less than the unconditional surrender of Ukraine is an admission of defeat. The man has too big of an ego and will never admit defeat.

  8. Trump can’t see a way past his own greed to help Ukraine. He tried by having Ukraine sign a “deal” on rare earth minerals. However, Putin has, in the meantime, told Trump that he is never getting his tiny hand on those resources so now Trump is stumped. Can’t make money out of Ukraine = no help for Ukraine.
