  1. Although [Wikipedia ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_National_Flag_(Ukraine))says that “the yellow-and-blue flag is first verifiably documented in Ukraine on 25 June 1848”, the history of the flag is much older than that.

The same colors can be seen in the most famous painting of Ilya Repin “The Reply of the Zaporoshian Cossacks to the Turkish Sultan” which describes the historic events of the **17th century**. Repin spent more than 10 years researching the details of the Ukrainian Cossacks and two flags – Blue and Yellow, and Black and Red were the colors of the Cossack Hosts.

But the colors go much deeper in age than that. Famous French scholar [Georges Dumézil](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georges_Dum%C3%A9zil) (1898 – 1986) ascribed the use of this particular combination of yellow-blue colors to the times of the **Indo-European epoch**.

Edit: The most recent and thorough DNA tests seem to prove what the ‘*Cradle of Civilizations*’ book states some time ago – e.g., Ukraine was the center of the Indo-European civilization:

  2. Слава Україні! Героям слава! 🙏🏻💜

  3. It’s a great flag. Slava Ukraini, and Happy Flag Day!🇺🇦

  4. Thats a beautiful flag, for a nation of wonderful people ❤️

  5. When I asked about the colors of the flag I was told it was the sky blue and grain (wheat?) below. The sunflowers work too!

  6. I can’t think of another flag so grounded in the beauty of physical life.

  7. If it wasn’t for the unjust and specter of war by a crazed lunatic, this would have been a beautiful scenery to take in.

  8. No wonder that so many Ukrainians settled on the Canadian Prairies.

    Looks like Saskatchewan.

  9. Ukranians in our town had a happy flag day event in the highstreet – was lovely to see the mayor of our small welsh town come along and say all the good things.
