A local dentistry chain will soon expand its Carytown offerings with a move to a new space a block away.
Elrod & Dunham Dentistry’s Carytown branch is set to move to a larger space at 10 N. Thompson St., about a block from its current location at 25 S. Nansemond St.
Branch office manager Miranda Maya confirmed the dentistry is taking over the 4,600-square-foot Thompson Street space, which was most recently home to a long-running ABC store that relocated in 2023.
Elrod & Dunham’s Carytown branch has been at the Nansemond Street location for several years. Maya said the building’s small footprint – around 1,700 square feet, per city records – led the dentistry chain to search for a larger space.
That search led to the former ABC store space, which is part of a building that also houses grocery store Ellwood Thompson’s.
Jonathan Bowden and Brooks Snead of Hackney Real Estate Partners are the brokers for the 10 N. Thompson St. listing. Per property records, the building is owned by Richmond Shopping Center Inc. in the care of Hutchinson Real Estate.
Along with being in walking distance from their current Carytown office to retain as many patients as possible, Maya said the new office will have expanded capabilities.
With the move, the office will be going from six to 13 operatories, the rooms in a dental clinic where services are performed. The new space will also have a manager’s office and a break room, two things the current location doesn’t have room for, she said.
The Nansemond Street location remains open and will continue to be until the new location’s opening, which will likely be around next May, Maya said. She said it is unclear when upfit will begin in the new location.
Maya said Elrod & Dunham had previously looked into moving to the former Baker’s Crust location at 3553 W. Cary St., but that did not pan out.
“That didn’t go through, and the ABC store ended up being perfect for us,” she said.
The Baker’s Crust space and an adjoining Starbucks are now planned to be demolished to make way for a gas station attached to the Carytown Kroger at 3507 W. Cary St.
Elrod & Dunham has three other locations: one is in Goochland at 2979 River Road West, and two in Mechanicsville at 9158 Atlee Road and 7516 Right Flank Road.
The Carytown location currently has 13 employees, and is hiring for different roles ahead of the move. Maya said the office hopes to almost double its employee numbers for the new location.
The ABC store on Thompson Street closed in February of 2023, reopening shortly thereafter a block away at 20 S. Nansemond St. The ABC store had been on Thompson Street since 1974, and made the move for around 1,000 square feet of additional space.
