US President Donald Trump on Monday reiterated that he brokered a ceasefire between Pakistan and India in May after a brief conflict, a claim denied by New Delhi on several occasions.
Trump claimed that he used trade to make Pakistan and India agree to the ceasefire. While Trump announced on May 10 on his Truth Social account, New Delhi has said that both nations had agreed to a ceasefire after the Director General of Military Operations-level talks.
“We stopped 7 wars, the real number is 10. We stopped Iran…from using a nuclear weapon. Every bomb hit its spot in Iran…. The big one was India and Pakistan. India-Pakistan was next level, could have been a nuclear war. It took 24 hours to stop it. I used trade,” the Republican said.
India struck terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) after the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam . Pakistan retaliated after India’s Operation Sindoor, leading to a four-day conflict.
Trump has imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods starting August 27, and an unspecified penalty over the sale and purchase of Russian oil. While announcing the tariffs, Trump has accused India of fuelling the Russian war machine.
“We stopped a lot of fights, very, very big one was India and Pakistan. We stopped that over trade. We are dealing with India and Pakistan. We said that we are not going to be dealing with you at all if you are gonna fight. They were maybe at a nuclear stage…Stopping that was really important,” Trump had earlier said.
Several world leaders, including Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu, have nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for “stopping” several wars.
Trump, who met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska recently, also said he will soon stop the Russia-Ukraine war, a key poll promise of his 2024 re-election. However, he dropped a hint that a bilateral meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy might not happen. “They don’t like each other,” said Trump when asked about the Putin-Zelenskyy meeting.
After meeting Putin, the US President has met Zelenskyy and several other European leaders to end the war.
