  6. I work at a large venue in Minnesota where Bill was doing stand-up, and I guess sometime during his performance, a lot of people just walked out, which doesn’t really happen where I work

  12. Maher is deeply unfunny. I used to watch his how, but I got so tired of him mugging to the audience after a joke (which I suppose was needed for a reaction). He just comes across like an obsolete Borsht Belt Hack.

  18. I’ve been watching Maher for years, all the way back to his ABC show. If you can’t see that he’s changed in the last 1-2 years then I don’t know what to say. His show also changed about 6-7 years ago too. Way less interesting and humorous. He started bringing on so many of these rage bait idiots before everyone else.

  21. Maron was doing a leftist, more legit political stand on some of the earliest internet radio programs while Bill Maher was doing his classic smug neo-liberal nonsense in the late 90’s. They’ve both been at this a long time. Maron’s legit and trying to be a decent person. Maher never has.

  22. I remember watching Maher’s movie, Religulous, way back. My main takeaway was basically, “good points, but what an asshole. I really don’t like him.” I’ve never liked him since.

  26. Maher has always been honest. His opinions on most things haven’t changed in decades. I think Maron is telling on himself here. If you want to make yourself an activist for the left you cannot diverge from them on anything. And real comedy is not compatible with that kind of strict ideology.

  31. I used to find Marc Maron a little annoying and pretentious until I saw his new special and realized I hate him because I hate myself lol. And now, I love him. It was a great special and I identified with him too much.

  35. I stopped watching Maher in 2017 when he platformed Kellyanne Conway and treated her as a friendly interview.

    I mean, there’s lots of other bullshit that he does that led to that decision… but the KAC interview was the tipping point for me.

    That being said, I went to see him live with the wife way before COVID, and enjoyed the show, except for one thing. He went off on an audience member, a tween girl, about being on her phone. She obviously didn’t want to be there in the first place and picking on her was like kicking a dog that decided to scratch themselves out of sheer boredom.

    Then COVID came, and ole Bill got all mask-averse.

    One thing I noticed during this: The idea of the mask was to protect OTHERS by reducing the infection rate. He kept lamenting about how it doesn’t do anything for HIM, never once (that I heard) mentioning that it was really to protect OTHERS. This idea was rampant on the right at the time, it’s like that concern didn’t even exist.

    That narcissism is why I stopped watching. My wife, too.

    A total and complete inability to recognize that he was being told to do something that was for the greater good.

    Sorry, that’s not what a liberal thinks like.

  42. I watch Maher very infrequently but tbh over the years he has been nothing if not consistent

  44. The problem with Maher is that like anyone else, he does have bias, and he pretends he doesn’t. He frequently has oddball topics that he obsesses over which I find childish. That being said, I still appreciate his ability to bring people of completely different ideologies together to talk about issues, there still isn’t any other platform for this type of discussion. The idea of his show is more appealing than the host himself.
