I was at a queer open mic night in dublin a couple years back. One of the Burke family came in in very dishevelled drag with an acoustic guitar. This is true. Made a screaming protest about nature and everything. I was like “whoo, nature!” from the back. I don’t think anybody got the joke, that it’s all nature whether we like it or not. People politely clapped as i remember it. Pityingly I guess but i don’t know.
The variety of culture victims was widely spread together in that room. I saw a drag queen self styled as a pint of Guinness who did very well and was well prepared with choreography and impressive dance moves. Premium.
I saw a youngish woman sexually assaulted by a youngish man there. He did a hand thing on her behind and retreated to leer at the bar greedily. It enraged me, honestly, I didn’t know if they knew each other or not but it seemed so wrong for the safe space I’d thought it was to be. Predatory. I’ll probably sadly count my years in the situations i didn’t hit someone. Regardless. Young people were there you’re talking 16/17 year olds looking for a community to sing heartening pop songs with. I was standing between their general areas for a bit just containing panic trying not to let badness like that happen again.
Later I went up for a cigarette, chickening out of putting forward for playing a song. To be honest the roster was already full. The two of them in question were talking outside but it was weird. It was a respectful distance. Empathetic. I just heard her say “depression, yeah” understandingly i guess. Seems like she wasn’t afraid of him and just kind’ve pitied him, but I don’t know, honestly.
Guys autumn is coming and I don’t know where love will begin or end, but I know acceptance of change can be good. One of the organisers of the open mic had a respectful acceptance of the Burke in drag when everyone was leaving the venue, and there was a courage there on both their parts I reckon. Who knows. That’s the story anyway.

Have they done a “Where’s Enoch?” book or would it be shite because he’s always just at the gates.
