Bavaria overtourism: Germany’s Eibsee Lake has become a victim of its own beauty • FRANCE 24

[Music] There’s Tik Tok and Instagram. Then there’s reality. Hordes of holidayers are descending on the lake of IBC in the German Alps. Many of them having seen it on viral social media posts. Having run the gauntlet of crowded buses, traffic jams, and vanishing parking spots. Most agree the reward is worth it. We did not think there will be so many people. It’s really beautiful. One thing that’s always a problem, of course, is that there are a lot of people here, but it’s easily accessible from Munich and a fantastic place to spend a day. But it’s not relaxing at all for the local municipality. Infrastructure is strained, rubbish bins are constantly full, and drivers ignore signs saying there are no spots left for parking. People often suggest setting up a barrier system before you reach the top of the mountain. This is not legally permissible in Germany as stand. The nearby town of Gry has 3,600 residents and 1,700 guests a night on average. Is the spot a victim of its own success? You’ll have to visit to find out.

Eibsee Lake in Bavaria is facing an increasing struggle to maintain its delicate balance between popularity and preservation. The lake, renowned for its stunning turquoise waters nestled at the foot of Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze, is now at the center of concerns over tourist overcrowding. Peter O’Brian tells us more.

  1. Ah beautiful, I have to take my wife, 4 kids and grandparents there sometime so we can have some nice pics for Instagram too…. thanks for telling me about this.

  2. Charge all non-EU passport holder, and reserve the place for Germans. Increase and decrease the fees to control the numbers. And start being pragmatic and stop bring politically correct. The assumption of treating everyone the same is assuming each nationality has no temperament of their own.
