Since October 8, 2023—when a massive crowd gathered in front of the Sydney Opera House to express ire at Israel and chant “gas the Jews”—Australia has seen a striking rise in anti-Semitism. And it has not been limited to rhetoric: there have been a number of violent attacks on Jewish schools, synagogues, and property that the government has denounced but done little about. Canberra has, however, joined in the effort to recognize a Palestinian state.
