European Troop Plans for Ukraine Slashed from 30,000 to 6,000–10,000

1. President Trump has signaled support for providing security guarantees to Ukraine alongside French and British proposals for a “reassurance force.” Although Northern European nations including the Netherlands, Denmark, and Estonia have expressed readiness to contribute troops, ambitious plans for a 30,000-strong force have been scaled back. France and the UK now plan a combined 6,000–10,000 troops, The Wall Street Journal reported on August 26.

2. Ukraine’s sovereignty is important but it’s even more important to not give Trump a “win” that would give him the political capital he needs to achieve his real goals – dictator for life, Jan 6 on steroids

3. It really is astounding to see all the walk-back and quibbling with regard to European defense. They’re still having issues with committing to troops and resources, prolonging all the issues with the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

   Another day will go by, little will be agreed to, less will be done. It is in many ways, disappointing.

4. Let’s face reality. Immigration issues have literally overrun the G8 European countries. They can no longer staff their militaries effectively and will not be able to for the foreseeable future. Ukraine will be decimated by Rz in a long grinding conflict and more people will keep fleeing from the East. There is no easy solution. Either we band together and fox problems or the game is over.

5. Last week’s meeting between Trump and Putin seemed very similar to the Munich agreement between Hitler and Chamberlain – I.e. getting a pinky promise that Putin wouldn’t attack any more.

   If history has taught us anything, be prepared for another offensive soon.

   If I were the NATO nations, I’d start plan how and what would constitute an Article 5.

6. Wow, if Europe really does send troops to Ukraine we really will be in the beginning stage of world war 3.

7. putin is sending soon to be ~2,000,000 people to their death, with no end in sight, and after 3.5 years of war, all of europe manages not even 1/200th of that to protect the country that has fought, suffered and bled to survive and halt putin from going further into europe.

   The headline is misleading, though the language used by the WSJ itself is problematic. The original WSJ report says:

   >> Meanwhile, grandiose plans for a 30,000-strong European peacekeeping mission have been pared back in part because Britain’s army doesn’t have enough manpower. France and the U.K. combined are planning to commit between 6,000 and 10,000 troops.

   So 6000 – 10 000 is the possible size of the combined British and French contribution, without counting contributions by any other countries. There is as yet no agreement on the final size of the force. Contrary to what the article implies, the force size has not been fixed to the anticipated size of the British and French contributions alone.

9. After the incompetent economic negotiations between the EU and the US, this is the second humiliation of Europe in such a short period of time.
   It seems that the strategy of soft power has finally failed.

10. This is just waste of time because there will be no peace until putin gets all of Ukraine either overtly or covertly.

11. 30000 or 6000, it doesn’t change a thing. It’s a drop compared to the 800k of Ukraine and 600K of Russia ( counting only the ones engaged in Ukraine).

    So this number doesn’t matter much. I guess what matters is the number of jets / tanks / capacities provided
