UN Chief: Famine in Gaza city is a “failure of humanity”, while Israel denies • FRANCE 24
Let’s cross to Jerusalem and check in with our correspondent Nogga Tarnipolski. Noga, tell us more about how the Israeli government has been reacting to this famine declaration. Is it likely to change anything about their approach? That’s a great question. The Israeli government uh has basically responded thus far um with great aggression and accusing the IPC, the UN body that determines where a famine is present of participating I’m quoting Prime Minister Benjamin now in an interview yesterday in a modern-day blood liel against Jews. He um he and his ministers say that there is quote no famine in Gaza. They reject completely the claims. And this is the part that um I’d like to emphasize. Yesterday, the Israeli statement included specific and technical accusations against the IPC. For example, Israel accused uh the UN of having changed its own standards and cutting the threshold of um of hunger of uh of malnutrition from 30 to 15 just for this report only. and a few other a whole line of accusations of this type. Well, we now have Jeremy Conandike who is the president of Refugees International and an expert on famine who’s been in charge of American responses on uh famine. and he simply torpedoes these Israeli claims among other things by very simply showing that the IPC determination of famine in Sudan last month was made using the exact same baseline criteria as this uh report issued about Gaza. The other thing I would like to add is that while the prime minister and the foreign minister of Israel um have angrily kind of thrust this report aside, it remains the case that several Israeli ministers have demanded that no aid enter Gaza. So the Israeli army a few weeks ago announced a change of policy once it became clear how grave the situation was in Gaza. They said they would, for example, ensure humanitarian corridors for UN trucks. Um that they would facilitate the airlifts that we’ve seen on some of our TV screens. The facts are that these humanitarian corridors are not working. You the UN says it is unable to bring safe to bring trucks in safely. Its drivers refuse to take the risks they’re being asked to take. and the air uh the air drops are very um spectacular to see but really are not able to help uh people very much. So there we have it. It appears that the Israeli response according to Mr. Conandike was really engineered to try and misinform he says and we have not heard back uh from the Israeli government since then. It’s obviously the weekend here so we might hear back just tomorrow. Noah, Gaza City not only facing famine, but also an imminent potentially offensive from Israeli troops. What more do we know about that operation and when it might actually begin? We don’t have any dates. Um, and we also don’t have any really um factability uh determinations. The Israeli army, I’d like to remind everyone, the chief of staff of the Israeli army opposed this entry into Gaza City when he was allowed to present a military plan to the cabinet a few weeks ago. He nonetheless was given the orders to prepare the plan and to prepare the army. So just two days ago, 60,000 reserve notices went out. That’s one of the first steps in trying to organize the army to prepare the army for a massive invasion of Gaza City. Um, we know that there are constant operations now in some in Gaza City, but mostly in the vicinity of Gaza City. This could be the start of an anticipated invasion earlier than we thought. But it also could be part of a psychological war so as to persuade Gazins to leave because they think they could fear that their city is now besieged and that they’ll have even less access to food and to water than what they’ve had previously. There is an Israeli effort underway. We know this from open statements made by Israeli political officials. there is an effort underway to quote unquote persuade Gazans to leave without officially evacuating them. So all of this appears to be in the mix right now. And of course the Israeli government has yet to issue a formal response to the offer of a ceasefire presented by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States approved by Kamas. Instead, we have the Israeli prime minister who proposed starting new negotiations from zero, but has not uh described what they might look like, where they might take place, and has not sent an Israeli negotiation team. So, we are very, very deep in the fog of war. We’ll be keeping an eye on all of that. Noga, thank you as always uh for your insight. That’s our correspondent there, Nogga Tarnipolski, reporting from Jerusalem.
Gaza City is officially gripped by famine, and it is likely to spread across the Palestinian enclave, the UN-backed global hunger monitor said on Friday in the first such declaration in Middle East history. Israel rejected the report, calling it an “outright lie”. Noga Tarnopolsky gives us the latest from Jerusalem.

Why does the EU still have a trade agreement with Israel?
Do u expect BIBI and his team to acknowledge famine in Gaza? Nonsense
Why not speaking of hamas which was the root caused of everything happening in Gaza. Where are the foods ration to the gazan. Famine is a propaganda only!
Here's the thing. If Netanyahu's argument had been a bit nuanced, like acknowledging that there were some problems and that they were working hard to solve them, it would have been less blatant, and more people would have believed him. Now he only has hardcore Israeli supporters on his side.
hasbara card expired, the world knows and will remember
“The drivers refuse to take the risks…” bummer for Gazans. Seems like Gazans should remove Hamas from their society.
Idf already surround hamas city hamas can't go out the city hijack truck and did bad thing at hamas city hamas getting humanitarian crisis is good thing,if un and pro hamas heart broken call hamas surrender and got humanitarian.
Military intervention
Not just Izrael, I'm boycotting all non essential products from ALL COUNTRIES, I just eat healthy and buy only essentials… ECONOMY COLLAPSE I don't care! Pulling back all investments and boycotting everything else (including stuff like entertainment and ANY content not related to this cause, etc) NO MONEY FROM ME until big business (private corporations) start actively being anti authoritarian.
Boycotting is healthy financially and physically and emotionally, it also brings people together.405
Anybody that starts war will experience faming. Palistinians started war on October 7 and it is normal if they are having faming
Clear genicide.
Siding with Hamas is failure of humanity. On top of it Israel let in 1,5 kilo food per person per day in August and 1,2 kg in July. UN and 170 NGO's stopped aid from 19th of May as they no longer could deliver to Hamas, condemning GHF who gives to civilians only (!!!). The ethical thing to do is to help GHF and Israel. The legal thing to do is somewhat harsher, as it is legal to stop aid if it is stolen by militants. We should send food to expand GHF, and commando soldiers to help Israel. That is being on the right side of history. We have failed as usual.
They Accuse to avert from their accountability.
I respect Noga Tornopolsky.
stupid UN chief. The UN must be sanctioned, the UN food is rotting at the gaze border
Why blame all Humanity for AIPAC and Criminal Israeli and American Politicians?
Also the UN continues to blame Israel, when in reality the UN is still trying to protect Hamas. And they are doing that at the cost of all ordinary people living in Gaza, people they claim to protect. The whole UN and all its leaders are protecting Hamas also at the cost of Hamas` hostages, sad to say.
Yes, thank you for agreeing to evacuate all of gaza to Paris.
The remaining Hamas members would be allowed to continue to live if they would do what PM Netanyahu just demanded them to do. Hamas did not allow that luxury for their victims. Just the opposite. Hamas has treated all their victims in such brutal ways, that their brutal actions can`t be even described in the media in detail. Viewers could get serious psychological symptoms only from hearing details about Hamas`s brutalities.
Just by looking at the facts one can say that the ordinary people living in Gaza don`t matter much for Hamas, regardless of their age. Hamas is not only using those people they kidnapped from Israel as their hostages. They also use all ordinary people living in Gaza as their hostages.
The whole UN and all its leaders know all that perfectly well. All that knowledge has not stopped the UN and its leaders from protecting Hamas at the cost of all ordinary people living in Gaza and at the cost of all Hamas` hostages.
Un n nato can talk talk but does nothing to stop the evil country.
Western countries are criminals! Nobody should trust western governments.
The IPC did change their standards, to include Israel. Israel doesn't tick the three criteria. At most they tick one.
The UN should let Israel use their own truck drivers, and take responsability for refusing to send truck drivers.
It's far safer legally to be an 'armed group' than a national army, no legal constraints attached.
What kind monster lets kids starve with food just miles away
I ask myself what's the point of continuing to debate if there is or not a man-provoked famine in Gaza underway, when we know the ministers of the occupation state are repeating very clearly that this is their objective , when their soldiers snipe and bombards everyday exhausted civilians striving to reach the few food distribution point. It is clear to everybody what these extremist zionist government intend to achieve here
France 24 News English "forgets" to tell you that all the ordinary people who live in Gaza would get all the aid they need very easily and very fast if Hamas would do what PM Netanyahu just demanded them to do. That would also stop the destruction of Gaza.
My favorite drunk "reporter".
Go go go ISRAEL!
To hell with EU let them cry to the UN.
Not interested in Palestine issue…
The UN has warned that any forced displacement of civilians is prohibited under international law and could be a war crime.
Drama queens 😅
What a beautiful heading?
Israeli smoke and shadows.
Chief of Staff protests and follows through.
Bibi's wellworn delaying tactics.
These same people Will not talk about the loss of innocent lives in Ukraine, a war instigated by them
😂😅👍✌👌😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😉
UN ignored Palestine voice from the start with the creation of illegal Israel, nearly 80 years of illegal occupation, , failure of corruption of security council protecting it. UN has created all of Palestinian woes. So UN spare me the crocodile tears.🇵🇸😎👁️
Then why doesn't the UN give the food to the Israelis to pass out
They changed the rules to fit the narrative they wanted to concoct
Shame on u (news outlets) and leaders of world especially US UK and EU who participate in this sin
Afghanistan and Yemen have hungry children too but UN doesn't care about them.
Baby formula is not allowed to enter in gaza because of israel pure evil
Divest this entity
We must not tradewith this entity cut this
