Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) along with its subsidiary RMC Defence has commenced the construction of the third Pohjanmaa-class multi-role corvette for the Finnish Navy.
The initiation of the construction was marked by steel cutting on 26 August 2025.

The shipyard is building four corvettes for the Finnish Navy as part of the €1.23bn ($1.36bn) Squadron 2020 project.
This corvette project aims to replace seven ageing vessels with the Finnish Navy.
The Pohjanmaa-class corvettes feature a length of 117 metres (m), a beam of 16.5m, and a draught of 5m. These multi-role vessels can reach speeds up to 26 knots and can be staffed by a crew of 70.
Designed to navigate the challenging conditions of the Baltic Sea and perform operations in ice, these corvettes are being constructed within a secure and specialised facility at the shipyard.
This facility meets both Nato security standards and the stringent quality requirements of such defence projects, stated RMC.
RMC CEO and president Mika Nieminen said: “The shipyard in Rauma has made significant investments, particularly in the 2020s, in the development of its production and the capabilities of the personnel, resulting in the shipyard becoming one of the most notable builders of modern ships designed to operate in challenging conditions and especially government vessels navigating in ice.
“We hope to play a strong role with our top-class domestic expertise also in icebreaker procurements in Finland as well as in international inter-government procurement projects.”
The first Pohjanmaa-class corvette was launched in May 2025 and is currently being outfitted. The second, which started production in October 2024, is at the hull assembly stage.
The Squadron 2020 project is expected to conclude by 2029 and has a “substantial” employment impact in Finland, contributing over 3,600 person-years.
In July 2025, RMC expanded its strategic alliances by forming a consortium with Bollinger from the US, Canada’s Seaspan, and Aker Arctic from Finland.
The consortium aims to secure contracts for icebreakers from the US.
