Denmark plans to invest approximately $1.53 billion directly in Ukrainian defense companies by the end of 2025, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen announced on August 29 following an informal meeting of EU defense ministers in Copenhagen.
“Ukraine needs significantly more military support today. Any delay could lead to much higher costs in the long term,” Poulsen said.
Last year, Denmark invested around $655 million in Ukrainian defense enterprises through the so-called “Danish model,” which allows direct investment in Ukrainian manufacturers.
Poulsen emphasized that Ukraine’s defense industry is highly efficient, able to start production within months rather than years, making it an economically effective model.
“Ukrainian producers can ramp up production in a few months, not years. That is why we need to do even more in this area. I hope other countries will support our approach,” he said.
Poulsen also noted that the first Ukrainian defense company will begin production in Denmark within weeks, with additional Ukrainian firms expected to join in the near future.
“I am confident this will be another step forward in strengthening support for Ukraine,” he added.
In addition to defense investments, Denmark recently committed at least $45 million to the Fund for Ukraine to attract investments for the country’s economic reconstruction.
Denmark, together with Norway and Sweden, is also funding a NATO initiative to accelerate the delivery of US weapons to Ukraine, providing the Ukrainian army with priority access to critical equipment, including air defense systems, under the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL).
Earlier, it was reported that The US Department of State has approved a possible $825 million Foreign Military Sale to Ukraine that includes 3,350 Extended Range Attack Munition missiles. Ukraine will finance the purchase with support from Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway, along with US Foreign Military Financing.
