U.S. President Donald Trump and some Western countries are opposing India’s purchases of Russian crude oil. Trump has even imposed an additional 25% tariff on India for this reason. However, India has made it clear that, while adhering to international rules, it is free to source its requirements from anywhere.

India’s Import From Russia

As a result, India has not only stepped up crude oil imports from Russia but also increased fertilizer purchases. In the first half of the current fiscal year alone, imports of Russian fertilizers rose by 20%.

India has increased imports of both crude oil and fertilizers from Russia despite U.S. objections, with Russian fertilizers now accounting for 33% of India’s total imports this year.

Russia’s fertilizer exports to India reached 2.5 million tonnes in the first half of the year, pushing its share in India’s total imports to a record 33%. According to a media report, a Russian industry official explained that this means every third tonne of fertilizer imported by India now comes from Russia. This has strengthened the trade relationship between the two countries. The surge was driven mainly by higher supplies of phosphorus-based fertilizers.
