Marta Kos from Slovenia: Albania has real chances to join the EU by 2029

During the Bled Forum in Slovenia, Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos expressed optimism about Albania’s European path. She praised the progress of reforms and stressed that, if the Albanian government continues at the same pace, membership in the European Union could become a reality by 2029.
“We have opened two more group chapters with Albania and we have agreed with Ed that we will celebrate, first in Brussels and secondly next year with the football match between member countries and candidate countries in Tirana and where it is understood that the President of UEFA will play with us, and so will some others. In 2028 we can have 28 members. And if Ed continues to do what he is doing excellently, then in 2029 we can have 29 members. However, I don’t have much time, I only have four years, so hurry up.
With Montenegro we are moving forward and it is possible that if we finish in 2026 in the technical aspect of the negotiations, in 2028 we could have 28 members of the EU. And if Edi continues to do what he is doing excellently, then in 2029 we could have 29 members. So hurry up”, said Kos.
