> Ethan Hawke is glad that it was Leonardo DiCaprio and not him cast as Jack Dawson, the leading man in James Cameron’s 1997 epic Titanic.
> “I don’t think I would have handled that success as well as Leo,” Hawke told British GQ in an interview published Monday. “He was a f—ing Beatle.”
It’s easy to picture Ethan in that role, actually. I’m sure he would’ve been great.
The intensity of the public eye is a whole other beast, of course.
Oh man, I could see that! I wonder if they screen tested him on camera. Some of that is on YT now.
Did Ethan peak at Gattaca?
I loved Ethan’s “Inside the Actors Studio”. He is very honest and sensible about his career trajectory.
When Titanic came out, Leo was already a quickly rising star in a way Ethan was not (Romeo + Juliet established him as a star and household name before Titanic). I doubt he would have had the same success just by being cast in Titanic.
Ethan never fully grew up the way Leo did.
A beetle would have survived.
Yeah, he was better off without it. Also, side note, Ethan Hawke is up there with Kevin Bacon in terms of actors who have aged like fine wine. Cannot say the same for Leo.
I think Ethan Hawke would’ve done fine with the fame Leo got, he was already famous himself, but he’s a super humble guy and has a very “everything happened for a reason” vibe so it sounds more like he’s praising Leo for how he handled his fame instead of lamenting not getting the role
