Czechia has agreed to buy 44 Leopard 2A8 battle tanks from Germany as it continues a major program to modernize its military. The tanks will be delivered by 2031 and will cost $1.6 billion. Germany is itself rearming, and part of that significant effort includes plans to procure about 1,000 Leopard 2A8 tanks of its own.
Some military analysts view tanks as a Cold War-era relic that are ill-suited for modern warfare and overly vulnerable to drones. But, as Ulrike Franke wrote in July, “as long as humans must operate on the modern battlefield, armored vehicles and the protection they afford will almost certainly” be a necessary part of combined arms warfare.
