Decline is a choice

  1. Deportations and people not having kids. I’m so *very* surprised.

  2. A “moon shot” effort to increase birth rates is somehow more palatable than increasing the quality of life of the population.

  3. With the level of uncertainty why would anyone have children.

  4. Japan went into a 30 year recession when its population shrunk.

    # Japan’s Three Lost Decades – Escaping Deflation

Investor interest in the Japanese economy is increasing globally, due to expectations of an end to deflation. Here we summarize the major events that led to a decades-long deflationary spiral.

  5. Is our understanding of life on Earth really that our population would just grow uninterrupted into eternity? A maximum sustainable population allowed by the environment is a foundational concept in biology, yet somehow we don’t find that applicable to our own species. Instead, we suck the planet of its resources, destroy its natural environments, and irreparably alter its climate, expecting our population growth to never slow down even as we very clearly approach the planet’s carrying capacity. We do not exist separate from our biology and planetary ecosystem, and if anyone is surprised by slowing population growth rates, they need to be brought back to reality: we are biological organisms bounded by biological laws.

  6. This will not be an anomaly. It will be a trend. Millennials and Zs don’t have an optimistic view of the future. My kids fall into both groups, they have no interest in having kids, and maybe 1/6 of their friends (same ages 29-30) have kids.

Im an X and by their age, I had both of them running around the house.

Given today’s climate, I doubt I’d have had the fortitude to raise two kids into this spiral.

  7. Ok, far be it from me to defend the man, but…

This has been coming for a while. As millennials are poorer than their parents, there’s more of them who either choose not to have kids or have small families.

Immigration has offset the slowing internal birthrate, but if immigration dips at all, (because of a pandemic or say a president starts deporting people), then growth will stop.

It’s an issue in other Western countries, too.

  8. His vaccine policies will help killing American population.

  9. He wants to exclude millions of people here on visas, and other immigrants from the census. That’s millions of people that would otherwise be counted according to the Constitution.

  10. I dry up every time a MAGA walks into the room.

  11. Meh, so what? Can’t be avoided, any more than global warming

  12. Got snipped before this economical bozo got re-elected, best $350 ever spent.

  13. I’m really wondering what male birth control will do on this front

  14. I’m around the age where one might have kids. I have a partner. It’s absofuckinglutely not happening anytime soon. I need to know that any child of mine isn’t going to be a corporate slave. This country needs to make some big changes or people aren’t going to play along anymore. I refuse to perpetuate the statue quo by rewarding it with another worker. Eat shit. If I can’t afford to take vacations with my partner or fix my car I’m certainly not bringing another human into this hell hole. The system can rot.

  15. If you make the world bad enough, people want to stop bringing kids into it.

  16. The only people that care are the ownership class that demand constant growth. I understand the need for workers to support the elderly and SS but this planet needs a lower population for sustainability

  17. Immigration is the only reason we have had any real population growth for quite some time. Fucking moron trump

  18. Not only could the population decline, but Trump is orchestrating the decline of the USA in trade and world influence. Trump is handing China the reins to world leadership.

  19. To be fair, this is pretty common. 75 percent of the world’s population lives in a country with a declining population. Lots of strategies have been deployed at different levels of govt to increase birth rate but none have shown large scale sustained success.

  20. Imagine being that much of a grub that an entire country is rethinking procreation.

  21. immigration has been propping up the American population for a long time. We’ve been in the 360-400 million range for a couple decades. And like South Korea and Japan have found, once your population starts to crash, it crashes hard.

  22. Who wants to bring children into a world the GOP envisions??

  23. ‘“I practically invented decline.” – Michael Scott’
    – Donald Trump

  24. How is this “receiving little attention,” it’s all Elon Musk talks about lately and is a major impetus behind several aspects of project 2025

  25. Florida and red states getting rid of all mandated vaccines for schools is definitely gonna start shrinking numbers
