A dubious penalty awarded in injury time thwarted Malta from obtaining a precious victory in Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier.

Malta had taken the lead in the 82nd minute with an Alex Satariano goal, the striker hitting home from a Magri Overend pass.

Minutes later Azzopardi was sent off with a straight red card after a foul in midfield, giving courage to the Lithuanians to push forward.

From a resultant corner, the referee pointed to the penalty spot in the 92nd minute after minimal contact between players in the penalty area, with Gineitis hitting past Bonello whose touch was unable to prevent the ball from entering the net.

The two teams had also shared the spoils in a 0-0 draw at Ta’ Qali earlier this year.
