They are built and custom tailored to process a specific type of crude with maximum efficiency
Some refineries take 20 years to construct
For example USA refineries are built to accommodate light sweet crude from Saudi Arabia

The Ryazan refinery was last attacked on August 2, 2025, by a Ukrainian drone, which forced the refinery to halt about half of its refining capacity. This attack on August 2nd was part of a larger series of attacks in August. The refinery had to stop two primary oil refining units, cutting its capacity by approximately 50%. This was not the first time the Ryazan refinery had been targeted, as it was also hit by drone attacks in late January and February 2025.
Bonus fact: The UFOs seen in this post’s image are actually lens flares. 🤪
