China, India, Russia seek to challenge US dominance at Tianjin summit • FRANCE 24 English

Chinese President Xiinping is leading a regional summit aimed at offering the world an alternative to the current westernled world order. Speaking earlier this Monday at the showpiece SEO summit, she slammed what he called bullying behavior from certain countries, what seemed to be a veiled reference to the United States. She’s welcoming several leaders in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization including Russian President Vladimir Putin and India’s Narendra Modi. We’re going to talk a bit more about all of this with our Delana Duza who joins me now on the set. Delana, a lot of the world paying attention to what’s going on there in Tanzin, China today. Indeed, Genie. Uh this summit comes as the United States tries to bring the war uh in Ukraine to an end. what we saw earlier today in Tanzhin was the leader of the world’s second largest economy come together with uh Narendra Modi uh leader he’s not really had great relations with uh in the past few years and the world’s most sanctioned country and together they called out injustices with the current rules-based order take a listen to what the Indian prime minister had to say keeping the aspirations s of the global south caged in an outdated framework is an injustice towards future generations. Multicolored dreams of the new generation cannot be telecast on black and white screen. [Applause] The screen must be changed. Now those comments from the Indian prime minister come just a week after the US slapped those 50% tariffs on uh New Delhi. Half that levy is for India’s continued purchases uh of Russian oil. Essentially, we have the Trump administration trying to uh point the finger of blame at the continued war in Ukraine on uh New Delhi because of what we’re seeing happening. Right. And and it does look like India is inching closer to China, particularly given those 50% tariffs. Uh that’s right. But we must uh add some caution to that because the border tensions between India and China still remain. But yes, we are seeing this thaw in relations between the two sides which actually started uh towards the end of last year. Uh experts are cautioning that India is not necessarily going to look eastward to China as it shops around for new markets uh in light of these 50% US tariffs. There was a bilateral meeting between uh the Indian prime minister and uh the Chinese president yesterday and the sense we got from both of them that was that it was a positive uh meeting. Narendra Modi uh said they reviewed the positive momentum in India uh China relations adding that they were committed to cooperation based on mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity. This was Narendra Modi’s first visit to China uh since 2018 and the its first bilateral rather uh face tof face with Xi Jinping since 2018 and his first visit to the country in some seven years. So Dano, where do things stand at the moment then with India and the United States? Well, uh, India’s leaving the door open to negotiation with, uh, the US. Uh, the position from New Delhi has been no confrontation, no capitulation. Now, we have gotten some reports this past week from the Frank Frankfurt Alamina, the German daily, which said that uh, Narendra Modi had dodged four Trump phone calls recently. The last time these two leaders spoke was on the 17th of June. That was one month after that ceasefire agreement uh with Pakistan came into effect. And essentially what we’ve seen since that ceasefire was reached between what Delhi says was just India and Pakistan was Donald Trump try and take credit uh for uh bringing that conflict to an end. We’ve even heard a report from the New York Times saying that Donald Trump mentioned to the Indian prime minister that Pak the Pakistani side had in fact nominated him for a Nobel Priest prize. Essentially uh New Delhi rebuffed that statement and didn’t really add to that trying to set the record straight. But essentially what we’re seeing now is the United States tightened the screws on India. The US trade secretary Peter Navaro essentially called it Modi’s war, the conflict in Ukraine, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. And what New Delhi is trying to do is call out the hypocrisy from the United States because China buys more Russian oil than India. Turkey which is a NATO member also buys Russian oil. And what New Delhi is saying is petroleum. So what India essentially does genie is it buys Russian oil, refineses it in India and sells it onto the European Union. Those petroleum um products are exempt from US sanctions. So the EU is not getting hit with what uh the US is doing to India. So basically uh India’s calling out the the hypocrisy uh here. These two sides are confident. The Indian side is confident that they can potentially reach a trade agreement. Uh some even saying that they were close to reaching a trade agreement. But from New Delhi, what has been eroded is the trust. You have to recall that uh both Donald Trump and Narendra Maldi are strong men. So they will have to do what is in the best interest of their country. But what is interesting regarding this scenario when you speak to anyone in India GDP whether they like Modi don’t like Modi like Russia don’t like Russia nobody wants Modi to back down. So it’s interesting it’ll be interesting to see who blinks first in this scenario. All right Dana thanks for that. France 24 is Dana Duza.

  1. A not so "regional" summit. This is a real world summit – and it's not being held in the decadent, irrelevant West, it's being held where the real power lies. It's being held in Asia-

  2. Russia has a GDP smaller than the state of Texas and China and India economies, both rely completely on exports to the United States

    China can’t even feed itself

This is not the New World order folks 😂

  3. It’s not the first time that USA is trying to bully India, the history is full of such instances but it’s high time for the “west” to understand that their hegemony can’t be accepted anymore. As the world’s 4th largest economy with 1.45 bn population and being the potential leader of the Global South, we have all the sovereign rights to decide our foreign policy and trade which aligns with our National Interest. And time again we have proved our resilience.

  4. India it's people complains about the west yet it has no problems to attend colleges there and to work there and send the money back to India, So why don't they go to China and Russia and see how they like it there,

  5. While EU idiots think of the 20th sanctions package to cripple Russian energy exports China strikes a $400 billion gas deal with Russia. No wonder why Putin will have the last laugh !! 😂😂😂

  6. France remember how USA backstabed your submarine deal from Australia?

And Australia is still a USA pàwn.
    Atleast France is stronger.

  7. Journalist Delano D'Souza forget to offer the last interview with the French bankers, if such term can be used in France, in French.

  8. Trump is treating it's friends like enemy and US enemies like friends.
Trump is disrespectful towards Europe, Canada, France.
    Treated India very badly

  9. India is currently not accepted by all parties.
After the SCO meeting in Tianjin, Modi was kicked out and Xi was not inviting him to attend the Chinese military parade. Instead, he invited the Pakistani PM and the US imposed high tariffs on Indian products. The EU preferred to work with Indonesia and ASEAN countries to replace Indian products……Xi more trusting Pakistan than India forever.

  10. Just want to say one think the way western country talk like you are inferior to me i dont like we indians dont like it we earn with our own hardwork no own give me free lunch so WHO THE HELL ARE YOU TO TELL US DO THIS DO THAT

  11. This is not the first time USA has sanction india and thats why we have relationship with RUSSIA AND CHINA and other country because we know that we cant rely on US

  12. U are absolutely right when you said, nobody here in India wants honarable prime minister to back down.
    And everyone openly hates trump
