Vladimir Putin’s invitation to host Volodymyr Zelensky in Moscow has been described as a “trap” by analysts, who suggested that such a meeting could weaken Kyiv’s positions in negotiations or even place Zelensky in danger.
The Russian president said on Wednesday that any direct talks between him and Zelensky to resolve the [Russia-Ukraine war](https://inews.co.uk/topic/russia-ukraine-war?srsltid=AfmBOopH-gLvSBZ6e-9b_TIqQLXvLhmOrRHLBnbtdVIJJD-0J9q-9pD_&ico=in-line_link) must take place in his capital, reiterating the invitation to his adversary on Friday.
Putin said: “The Ukrainian side wants this meeting and offers this meeting. I said: ‘I am ready, please come, we will definitely provide conditions for work and security’.”
The pair have not met in person since December 2019 for the Normandy Format summit in Paris, convened to resolve fighting between the two countries in [Ukraine’s](https://inews.co.uk/topic/ukraine?srsltid=AfmBOoo1Qjm8lSbQXimT8bK_E8AZh2WBiKxd2MbMErmikBNKOYxqF7KC&ico=in-line_link) eastern region of the Donbas.

“The Russian government has been very clear that they don’t recognise Zelensky as the legitimate president of Ukraine, so it makes it seem extremely suspect that they would invite him in this way.”

Putin inviting Zelenskyy to have the meeting in Moscow is a power move. He wants to present it as a surrender by Ukraine for the Russian people.
Even if Zelenskyy wasn’t harmed, it would still create positive optics for Russia with no real benefit for Ukraine, and even potentially weaken their position.
A neutral country would be the best choice.
