Man, I miss Gamestation.

  1. Gamestation. Now that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time…..a long time…

  2. I used to run the Walsall and Wolverhampton stores many, many, many moons ago…

  3. Man i loved gamestation. The one in derby used to have a travelling man above it, even!

  4. This is National Trust level heritage, and must be protected.

  5. I miss when video game shops weren’t all naff merchandise. Walking around and begging my mum to buy me some obscure pre-owned game was a formative memory.

    I guess we have Cex.

  6. And now Game stores are mostly inside sports direct stores and you have to find the games hidden around the funko pops and pokemon plushies

  7. I used to love Gamestation. 2 second hand games for £20 was where I rinsed most of my money.

I never thought Game was as good, and CEX is barely cheaper than new, assuming you’re not getting a 5 year old copy of FIFA or CoD.

  8. GameStation was so good. They had a lot of retro games (so retro back when it was open was like SNES, N64 and such). Always found some food bargains there.

  9. Gamestation prices were always the best, I used to get half a dozen PS2 games for what one AAA game costs now. RIP

  10. On holiday in Sicily in a village (Mazzaro) last year I came across a long closed video rental store. Through the grates there were cardboard cutouts advertising Junior —it was surreal and amazing, a spiritual experience even
(In Google maps it had always been shut)

  11. Many Saturdays were spent going to my local game station.

  12. Considering they have been closed a good 12/13 years it’s holding up well Many good memories at Gamestation.

  13. I thought the one in Norwich castle mall lasted a long time only recently has it been occupied again

  14. Think it was Hemel that had a Game, Gamestation, and Electronics Boutique within a short walking distance of each other. Good times.

  15. NGL – I’d be tempted to liberate that signage 🤔

  16. I still remember Electronics Boutique, hoping my mum and dad would let me have a look inside when doing the shopping in Halifax. Always used my best puppy dog eyes when I found a Mega Drive game, then later a PS1 game I wanted my dad to buy me.

  17. Was this in the Arcades? I can’t remember it.

  18. God GAMEs are so soulless compared to these places

  19. A lot of the stock was bundled into lots and sold at an auction house in Dudley.

I managed to pick up a few lots, the best one being about 7 Sega Saturns, one was a development unit with the cartdev system. I like to think someone traded that in with them at some point

  20. All you lower class cretins shopped at the Station. You’d find me frequenting the Boutique.

  21. I used to frequent that specific place. Some of the biggest gaming moments I had started with a purchase from that gamestation. I feel blessed to have lived in that era where game shops existed. I remember the opposite side we even had a Grainger Games for a time.

I don’t live around the area anymore but when I visit I see a different shop in that spot. I didn’t realise under the doomed shop façade that the original setup is still there. The whole area makes me feel sad to be honest with all the shops closed down.

  22. One of the best companies I’ve ever worked for! God I miss them

  23. Gamestation was always better than Game for me.

Game where I am is effectively a room in the back of a Sports Direct filled with plushies and stuff.

  24. In my town there was a GAME much further along the same street as Gamestation.

GAME then bought Gamestation. That store turned into a second branch of GAME, within line of sight of the first one.

  25. I used to work at gamestation when I was in 6th form. One time they had me dress up in a giant Mario costume and hand out flyers around town, that was pretty cool.

I’ve still got an assassins creed hoodie which was the ‘work uniform’.

  26. They used to get a lot of retro consoles and all manner of PS2 accessories in mine. Got a Japanese Dreamcast for £20 and snowboard peripherial for the PS2 for 49 pence.

What a hunk of shite that snowboard accessory was, but worth trying it on SSX Tricky

  27. I used to work at a gamestation, hands down one of the best jobs I had, it was the perfect environment for a 17 year old gamer girl. HQ used to foot the bill for monthly afterwork get together so we could all hang out and play new releases, and we could borrow whatever we wanted. Also if someone brought something to trade in and they were an asshole we could mark down the trade in price and buy it for ourselves a bit cheaper. Not nice to do, but was only used when you had a rabid customer.

    Man, I miss that job!

  28. Some say you can still hear the heavy metal and get the odd whiff of B.O.

  29. Ruins of a bygone age is also a good description of Ellesmere Port as a whole.

  30. When I was a kid I had a choice of where to buy a game in Bangor, Wales. Press X games, game, game station, acme computer games. Now there’s only CEX and that’s used. Makes me sad but i do understand the why

  31. That must be older than the grainger games that still hadnt been fully removed in Doncaster Frenchgate when I last went earlier in the year. Sad state of affairs.

  32. My goodness, when was the last time *any* Gamestation was open…has that shop been empty for a long, long time?

  33. Gamestation > Game. Always. Every one I went into had a wee retro section that had reasonably priced games before they sky-rocketed, I managed to find Silent Hill 1, MGS Twin Snakes for the GC and Zombies (Ate My Neighbours) for pennies. When Game said they were going to buy them over, they went out of their way to guarantee that they’d keep the retro-sections. Did they fuck. The only thing I ever bought out of Game was Guitar Hero 2 with the guitar, and that’s because nowhere else had it. Never had any reason to go back.

CEX, a glorified pawn shop, is a poor imitation.

  34. Still got my metal card from there. Got my OG PS3 from there.

  35. I found a copy of Koudelka in the gamestation near me. KOUDELKA. It was such a gem of a store.

Totally screwed when Game bought it though. They had no clue what to do with it and we had no need for Game 2.0…

  36. You thinks thats old my local town had a a blockbuster that had been closed for maybe a decade and wasn’t occupied and sign still up. It was demolished and replaced with a library on ground floor and cinema screens on the 1 and 2. Kinda fitting that new building loaned out stuff and involved films

  37. There’s been the remnants of a JJB sports in my town centre for well over a decade now.

  38. Am I alone in remembering the games shop Jakarta? I think it was an offshoot of Virgin.
