SCO summit: ‘The most anti-American nations in the world chatting and laughing’ • FRANCE 24

New Emily is joining us now though for the press review starting off with coverage of the summit in China. What do you have for us Emily? Well, let’s start in China with the front page of the English language China Daily here. Uh it’s celebrating Xi Jinping’s global governance initiative. It also quotes the Chinese president as saying that quote a cold war mentality is haunting the world today. The South China Morning Post is also uh covering the story on their front page and they’ve got this picture here of Modi Putin and Xi Jinping looking rather friendly and that type of photo comes back a lot in the coverage. Uh meanwhile in India though they’re looking at the relationship between the three leaders in particular how Modi and Putin shared a ride in the back of his limousine. Uh not all Indian papers are uh quite so celebratory. You’ve got the Hindu here that’s got a more critical uh tone. It accuses Modi’s collaboration with Xi Jinping as a capitulation. And finally, from uh the three main countries here, uh the Russia uh press agency um praises the warm welcome that Vladimir Putin receives as well as the particular attention which was given to the Russian delegation. What about the rest of the press and how are they reacting? Well, a lot the story is in a lot of the uh other papers around the world and on their front pages in France here. Lufigaru again with that same picture of the three leaders um looking quite friendly for Ligaru. Xi Jinping has united an anti-American Trump anti-American front in opposition to Trump. Um let’s have a look at Dvel Velt. Still here the leaders almost hand in hand. Sky News is offering an interesting analysis on the friendliness of the leaders at this uh summit. They say that the summit is a show designed to rattle the West. The article says that the striking optics of the event is what people are going to remember. Quotes leaders from some of the most populous, influential, and anti-American nations in the world chatting, eating, and laughing together. Now quite an interesting article bearing in mind all of the coverage from China, Russia, India and the rest of the world. And the New York Times is building on this as well with this article here. It says that the three countries are trying to signal unity despite their differences and that their display of friendship is designed to offer an alternative to global US leadership. The article says that the imagery shows how Trump’s geopolitical disruption has become a rallying call for many other countries. Just getting a new death toll coming into us from Afghanistan. This is from the Red Cresant of 1,24 people killed. Now, what’s the paper saying on this? Well, the New York Times has kind of a geographic uh article looking at the nature of the earthquake, the 6.0 magnitude earthquake. Its epicenter was close to Jalalabad. uh as this map shows it was only 8 kilometers deep making it a shallow earthquake. Now if you don’t really know why that’s important, Al Jazzer has this explainer article um going into detail and about why shallow earthquakes are so dangerous. It says that because the energy has less distance to travel before it reaches the surface. The ground shaking is more intense and more destructive, particularly for fragile homes and vulnerable communities. and Afghanistan’s vulnerability has um more uh coverage. For instance, Reuters has this article here today reporting that Trump’s aid cut in Afghanistan have made earthquake response rather complicated. US aid used to provide for 45% of all humanitarian assistance. Now, the humanitarian aid has gone from $3.8 billion in 2022 to $767 million uh this year. According to the UN, more than half of the country already required humanitarian assistance before the earthquake and liber goes into a bit more detail about um that situation. It says that the earthquake will just exacerbate the already existing crisis since the return of the Taliban. The country has become one of the poorest in the world. The article cites a study in the Lancet which found that 14 million people could die in the next 5 years as a direct result of these budget cuts. Now the sumund freedom fertila coming up in the papers but the Israeli press how are they covering this? Uh let’s start with the times of Israel they’re reporting uh about the summ flatillaa and how it left Barcelona for the second time after having to stop for bad weather. Uh Israel Hayam has a slightly different take in this article. It explains that the aim of the flutilla is to create a humanitarian corridor despite Israel already providing humanitarian relief. That’s a quote from that article there. The Jerusalem Post uh meanwhile has this uh story here. It reports that Beng has developed plans to designate flatillaa activists as terrorists. Uh activists will be held in prolonged detention and denied special privileges like television, radio or certain foods. Now despite the humanitarian miss nature of the mission uh the flatilla would be regarded as an attempt to undermine Israel’s sovereignty. And finally from Oolie the visa festival Paul Marage is in full swing in Purple in the south of France. What’s this about? This is the 37th edition uh of this photojournalism festival and the Guardian brings us some of the highlights of the past few years including uh the winner uh of the 2025 edition by Sahir Algora, a photo of displaced Palestinians returning to the north of the Gaza Strip in January 2025. Uh the also features this article here from 2024 by Cynthia Bull um of destruction in Jakarta. And then finally uh this photo here from 2020 of the forest fires in California, but it’s well worth a look if you have time. Yeah, very dramatic images. Thanks very much, Emily.
