The article in the Aug. 20 print edition of LNP | LancasterOnline headlined “McCormick touts spending” caused me to think.
Those leading the Department of Government Efficiency claimed to have found billions of dollars in “waste, inefficiencies and overstaffing” in our federal government.
I wonder, did DOGE find any waste or inefficiencies in our current defense budget that runs into the hundred of billions?
Did DOGE subject the federal defense budget to the same standards of review that it subjected other government agencies and departments?
Surely there must be some cuts we can find in this humongous appropriation, without compromising our nation’s security.
I understand the need for a review of our nation’s spending, and I think any organization without periodic review of its mission and spending will eventually lead to bloat and inefficiency.
Most American families have to do this exercise with their own family budgets. I don’t think any department or branch of government should be spared a scrupulous review of its budget.
President Dwight Eisenhower, a five-star general, warned us about the military-industrial complex and its voracious appetite for funds. Let’s cut waste, inefficiency and bloat in all departments, sparing none.
