The Czech opposition party SPDPN plans to radically change the rules for Ukrainian refugees to stay in the country. The leader of the movement, Tomio Okamura, said that Ukrainians will be able to stay in the country only if they work in positions that are not of interest to Czechs.

This is reported by Denikn .

Okamura said that reviewing the residence permits of all Ukrainians in the Czech Republic is one of the key conditions for the SPD party to enter the government after the October parliamentary elections. He stressed that the movement’s ambition is to implement its own program only within the government.

According to Okamura, most Ukrainians are in the Czech Republic under temporary protection due to the war in Ukraine. The SPD leader noted that the large influx of refugees has worsened the availability of rental housing and extended waiting times for medical services.

“This is not hate, but I am a Czech politician and I am on the side of Czech citizens,” he said.

The party’s proposal stipulates that only those Ukrainian citizens who work in positions for which there is no interest among Czechs will be able to remain in the country.

In addition to migration policy, the SPD also proposes rejecting the EU migration pact, abolishing the new ETS 2 emissions quota system, increasing pensions and returning the retirement age to 65, strengthening control over social benefits, increasing support for people with disabilities, and tougher punishment for animal cruelty.

The SPD leader also insists on holding a general referendum, where citizens would have the right to vote on virtually all issues except fundamental rights and freedoms, the budget, and key appointments, including international obligations such as the Czech Republic’s membership in the EU and NATO.

Elections for deputies to the lower house of the Czech Parliament will be held on October 3 and 4. According to the latest polls, the Social Democratic Party (SDPN) has a chance to enter parliament and become part of the government coalition, which could lead to the implementation of the proposed measures regarding Ukrainian refugees.

Experts emphasize that the scenario with the SPD entering the government creates risks for the Ukrainian community in the Czech Republic, especially given the anti-Ukrainian rhetoric of some right-wing parties that may form a coalition with Andrej Babis’s populist ANO party.

We will remind you that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that Ukrainian refugees in the country receive more generous assistance than unemployed Hungarians, and did not rule out limiting financial support in the future.

The day before, it became known that from October 1, 2025 , the Netherlands will more than double the amount of monthly asylum contributions for Ukrainian refugees.

Earlier, in Germany, the Prime Minister of the federal state of Bavaria and leader of the Christian Social Union, Markus Söder, called for a review of social support for Ukrainian refugees. In particular, he proposed canceling the payment of the so-called “citizen’s aid” – social support received in the country by the unemployed and low-income people.
