A bus driver has died and 28 people have been injured after a collision between a passenger bus and a lorry near the village of Drienovec in eastern Slovakia on Monday morning.
The regional fire service said 33 people were on board the bus at the time of the crash. Twenty-one of the injured were taken to the Louis Pasteur University Hospital in Košice, which activated its trauma plan. Two patients were reported to be in a critical condition.
The driver, who was trapped in the wreckage, was airlifted to hospital in Košice with multiple traumatic injuries but later died, officials confirmed.
Other casualties were treated in hospitals in Rožňava and Šaca. Emergency services dispatched seven ground crews and a rescue helicopter to the scene, with firefighters working to free the driver and evacuate passengers.
Police closed the affected stretch of road, diverting traffic onto alternative routes via Moldava, Budulov and Turňa nad Bodvou.
