Scene examination to continue after fatal shooting of Tom Phillips

Tom Phillips was fatally shot by police early Monday morning in Waikato after allegedly firing at an officer during a burglary response near Piopio.One police officer was critically injured, shot in the head at close range, and airlifted to Waikato Hospital for multiple surgeries.One of Phillips’ children was found at the scene and taken into police custody. The other two children were found “well and uninjured” at a campsite yesterday evening. The children’s mother released a statement, expressing relief that the ordeal is ending, sadness over how events unfolded, and gratitude to those who supported the whānau over the past four years.
