Cymru U21 2-6 Denmark U21

UEFA Under 21 Championship Qualifier

Monday, 8 September

Rodney Parade, Newport

Cymru opened their qualification campaign for the UEFA Under 21 Championship with a defeat in an entertaining match at Rodney Parade, which was the definition of the old adage, a game of two halves.

Cymru took a 30-second lead in the match through Tanatswa Nyakuhwa, which stunned Denmark.

The Danes looked useful going forward and once the frustration of conceding such an early goal wore off, they created several chances to equalise. However, it was Cymru who would score again. Nyakuhwa turned provider to set Christopher Popov free to make it 2-0.

After Evan Watts pulled off a series of fine saves to deny Denmark, he was eventually beaten when Thomas Jørgensen netted to keep the visitors in touch with their hosts.

Denmark turned on the style in the second half with the Cymru defence struggling to cope with their counterattacks.

The home crowd at Rodney Parade was stunned as Denmark scored five goals to turn this game around with Adam Daghim, Conrad Harder, Oscar Schwartau, August Priske and Silas Andersen all on the scoresheet.

Next for Cymru is a home match against Belgium on 10 October before travelling to Austria on 14 October.
