Gov. Tim Walz issued an executive order Monday aimed at preserving vaccine access in Minnesota.
The move comes as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Food and Drug Administration have narrowed eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine and pulled $500 million in funds for mRNA vaccine research.
“Vaccines are one of the greatest public health achievements in modern medicine,” Walz said in a statement. “While the Trump Administration attempts to limit Americans’ access to preventative care, Minnesota will be guided by science and medical expertise, prioritizing the health and safety of our people.”
As part of his order, Walz directs the Minnesota Department of Health to collaborate with other state agencies to expand access to vaccines.
The order also directs the state epidemiologist to issue a standing order for the COVID-19 vaccine — and potentially other vaccines — to “expand access to the COVID vaccine despite federal limitations.”
Minnesota, unlike some other states, allows pharmacists to administer vaccines outside of the uses endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s advisory panel.
