Two-time Olympian Sumit Nagal will spearhead the Indian tennis team’s challenge when they face ninth-seeded Switzerland in a Davis Cup 2025 World Group I tie at the Swiss Tennis Arena in Biel on Friday.

India, 37th in the Davis Cup rankings, will take on world No. 24 Switzerland after sweeping Togo 4-0 in the play-offs to qualify for the World Group I in February.
Switzerland, on the other hand, head into the tie against India after losing 3-1 against Spain.
Sumit Nagal, the country’s top singles tennis player at world No. 290, will be joined by Aryan Shah, 401st in the ATP tennis rankings, and the 626th-ranked Dhakshineswar Suresh in the Indian squad.
India’s top-ranked doubles player and world No. 22 Yuki Bhambri was forced to miss out after a heel injury sustained during his run to the US Open 2025 semi-finals ruled him out of the squad.
N Sriram Balaji and Rithvik Choudary Bollipalli will be India’s specialists for the doubles rubber while Rohit Rajpal is the non-playing captain of the squad.
Meanwhile, world No. 155 Jérôme Kym is the highest-ranked player in the Swiss squad, which also features Marc-Andrea Huesler and Dominic Stricker, who are 222nd and 244th in the ATP singles rankings.
Jakub Paul and Henry Bernet are the doubles specialists in the Switzerland squad.
The winner of the India vs Switzerland tie will advance to the 2026 Qualifiers 1st Round, while the losing nation will be relegated to the 2026 World Group I play-offs.
All ties in the Qualifiers 2nd Round, World Group I and World Group II follow a best-of-five format.
The opening day of the India vs Switzerland tie will see two singles matches followed by a doubles match and two reverse singles on the second day. Every match will be played as best-of-three tiebreak sets.
Currently, India have a 2-1 head-to-head lead against Switzerland in the Davis Cup. The last meeting between the teams was in 1993 when Leander Paes and Ramesh Krishnan helped give India a 3-2 win in Kolkata.
The Indian tennis team is yet to win the Davis Cup but has finished runners-up on three occasions in 1966, 1974 and 1987.
