I’m in an “Irish” bar in Germany and they have Newcastle Brown on tap. I’m from the UK (albeit the south) and don’t think I have ever seen Newcastle Brown other than in bottles.

Is this a thing in your pub?

  1. I have seen it in the south before, granted I don’t drink often at all though so not an expert but I recognise it

  2. No, never seen it on draught to be fair!

For some reason draught always tastes better too. Blue Moon on draught is nectar of the gods.

  3. How can you get a bottle o dog in a tap? Do they serve it as an actual pint or do you get a jug and a half pint glass?

  4. Spent an afternoon trying to find one in Newcastle a few yeArs ago but came up shot

  5. Used to see it on tap back in the 90’s in some pubs (midlands), but I can’t remember the last time I saw it maybe around the turn of the millennium.

  6. Don’t think they sell it in kegs in the UK, they may have in the past but its pretty much just bottles sold here. They do sell it to the export market in kegs though as you’ve seen.

Similar to Tenents IPA which isn’t found on draught in Scotland but can be found in Italy relatively easily as its seen as a premium export beer. If you wonder what that tastes like imagine Tenents but a lot more bitter.

  7. Irish pubs in far off countries have odd choices for beer. There was one in Milan, many years sgo- it had Tennant’s Super on draught, alongside Murphy’s and Caffreys. No Guinness though, strange.

  8. Seen it in the US on tap. It has a better rep there than in the UK (similar to Stella, which is on the “import” list and seen as European and fancy). I lived in HK years ago and was at an upscale bar that happened to serve Boddington’s. Server came out with a can, poured it at the table, and used one of those head scrapers to remove the excess head. Was so funny seeing a can of Boddington’s treated with the upmost respect.

  9. Looks like it’s one of them export only ones like Kilkenny in ireland

  10. I drank it on Bermuda a good while back on tap. The frog or something

  11. For some reason Santiago in Leeds used to sell it on draft maybe 10 years ago. Never seen it anywhere else and I’ve lived in Newcastle haha.

  12. I’ve seen it on tap in the States.

And they had a Tap in The Globe in Stanley in the Falklands when I was there in 2017, 2018 somewhere around there.

I’m not convinced it was actually Newcastle Brown coming out of the tap mind, tasted very strange.

  13. Only place ive ever seen it on draft was in the shopping centre at some pub where the Carrefour in Calais was!

  14. I’ve had some very jolly evenings -albeit many years ago- in Gosforth when I was doing a load of work with Northern Rock which involved draft Newkie Brown.

  15. I’ve seen it a couple times, but it’s not super common? Definitely seen it in bottles way more than on tap.

  16. I’ve only ever seen it in a Paris bar. I thought it was just merchandising shite, so I asked for “Une bouteille de Brun, s’il vous plait” and we struggled for about 5 mins until I realised it was on draught.

  17. I’d never seen it on tap anywhere in the UK at all yet the first time I’d seen it was in a restaurant/pub on top of a mountain outside of Vancouver, Canada.

I was on a business trip and being the only Geordie in the group my colleague completely disregarded whatever I was going to ask for and told me I’m trying it, being honest I was going to order it to try it anyway.

  18. The Trent House in Newcastle had it on tap for a few years, around 2016/18

  19. Seen Tennent’s Super on tap in many pubs/bars, guess where? 😉

  20. Seen it on draft in a couple of places in the UK over rhe years, but it’s not common (I suspect if you went closer to the Geordie shore you’d see it more, that’s how that works of course).

Not my go-to beer, but ya can’t really go wrong with it – pint bottle, normally decently priced and drinkable…

As a “flip side” – I’m Irish (lived in England mostly for 2+ decades with stints all around the place) but I was creased laughing when I was based in New York and the “Irish bars” were selling Harp Lager as some sort of premium import beer…

  21. Yeah, so this is a real rarity to me as well. I’ve only ever seen this on draught abroad bizarrely, in San Antonio (Texas) of all places.

  22. Used to sell it on tap in newcastle years ago but u don’t see it anymore, or i haven’t anyway.

  23. Only place I’ve ever seen it on draught was in the student union bar in Newcastle Uni about 8 years ago. Probs not there anymore since they turned it into a spoons.

  24. It’s on tap at the Irish bar by checkpoint Charlie in Berlin

  25. Not seen that, but I have seen special brew on tap once in a ‘British’ pub in Italy.

  26. I could swear I’ve seen it somewhere, but couldn’t tell you where. Definitely not common in my experience though.
